Las Vegas put on a spectacular sendoff for the strip’s iconic Tropicana Wednesday, complete with drones and fireworks as they imploded the building. The city plans to put an MLB stadium in its place, aiming to be open by 2028. Liz Kreutz reports for TODAY.

What a dumb question...
Reporter: Did the strip look like anything as it does today?
Yes, they had sports venues, mega hotel/casinos and they had a great big sphere back then...

So tragic. So many memories. I saw Sinatra and Dean Martin perform here back in 1966. Frankie Avalon and Frankie Valli were both regulars. Lets see there was the time i met Tony Bennett and Steve McQueen pulled up in his mustang. We would start at the tropicana and roll over to the Copa Room where there'd be Don Rickles, Liz Taylor, Bobby Darrin, Lana Turner, Patty Duke, Mary Tyler Moore. The Rat Pack and basically any big wig vegas guy that ive heard the old timers mention. What a time huh? Wiskey, tuxedos and cigarettes. Lots of booze and smokes. A kiss is just a kiss, as time goes by.

Very sad it was my first hotel I stayed at in 1990 for 3 days. It was cold in the 40's and we stayed in the hotel the entire time never left until we went back home but had a blast eating at the buffet, going to the comedy stop at Rodney Dangerfields, went to dinner shows every night, gambled a bit and loved our rooms. I will miss this place very much.

Seems toxic to be there and breathe the dust from the implosion.

The Classy thing to do would have been to play music from the tropicana's era as the implosion happened. A final salute to the time it was erected. Instead of all this poppy obnoxious Millennial Bruno Mars top 40 crap

1:18 Adding an NBA team and an MLS club should complete Vegas’ long-term game plan into the future of sports in that city.

Elvis is singing, “All Shook Up”.
What are you doing to his town?
Let’s all go watch “Viva Las Vegas”, at Graceland.

In related news, Tampa Bay followed suit and imploded Tropicana Field today in preparation for a new Rays' ballpark.
