Delongi's EC product line is compact yet powerful. I have used many other brands, some even twice or three times more expensive than this series, but no as good as this one. My old one just retired after 6 years service. I am going to upgrade it to this new model since it's on sale in NZ.

Im considering purchasing a Delonghi Dedica Arte EC885, and want to get a separate non-pressurized portafilter (bottomless portafilter) for better crema, after I watched your video on non-pressurized vs. pressurized basket. Which Bottomless Portafilter do you recommend I look at to be compatible with the Delonghi Dedica Arte ? Thanks !

Hi Tom, I just saw this video after only recently purchasing the new Dedica "Manual Arte", it was on sale here in Australia and looked like a good machine for A$279 ( US$200 APPROX ), so I thought I would buy one, since I haven't owned a coffee machine before and only wanted something small. I can make some comments based on the machine so far, generally makes ok coffee using the standard pressurised baskets. The new steam wand is the biggest let down, it's not very good, it is far too long for the unit, making it difficult to get a pitcher in and out, also the steam stops and starts and pressure is not great. I am struggling to get a decent microfoam with this wand. It still has the 3 Pressurised only baskets, single and double shots plus pod basket, I think they should have included a Non Pressurised basket, given the small additional cost too, which would help in getting a better extraction.

I have a Specialista which I use with with a bottomless portafilter and unpressurized basket. Do not use its grinder (hard to fine tune at right grind levels). Its tamper is nice, but after leveling all I need is a very light tamper, so do not use that either. The pressure gauge is nice for fine tuning the grind size and detecting bad puck preparation. I do not use the steamer either as I like using a Nespresso whipping/heating device that does not introduce any water into the milk and allows me to precisely get the type of foam I want by varying the fat % in the milk. So, to summarize, the Dedica Arte with a separate espresso grinder, a third party bottomless portafilter, is just fine for me. Drop the steam wand and give me a pressure gauge and I would buy it over the Specialista for the smaller footprint and identical espresso making capability.

The Lelit PL41TEM is €490 in France. The same price as the Bambino which I find very expensive. The Gaggia is €460. But has neither PID nor pressure gauge while the Lelit has both. As for the Solis Barista Perfetta Plus, it costs €430. The De'Longhi EC885 is 250€, we are clearly not in the same price category.
There is the Breville Barista Max+ which is currently €238. It's a really low price, but I'm not really excited about this machine. The grinder doesn't seem up to par to me. So I'm a little lost in all this, I can't make up my mind.

The mod that we need is a adjustable OPV, that really does make a different, but haven't seen anyone come up one if it's possible.

So I read up on DeLonghi website the new machine comes with an 18 gram double basket. Not sure what changes were made to acomódate the extra 4 grams but it’s a lot better than before. I’m thinking the internal plastic distributor has a lower profile to accommodate. This also triggers my curiosity, maybe a non pressurized 18 gram basket can fit the stock portafilter. I’ve seen you do the mod to hacksaw it into a bottomless. Any other ideas or thoughts in regards to this?

Will its body, and basket and Portafilter, be of stainless steel and non-pressurised? If so, probably another 75% in price from ec685 will be worth while.

Hi, I have just received my DeLonghi Arte 885M. It’s my first coffee machine and I wondered if the wand, when delivering hot water is supposed to make a pulsating noise. Also, the water flows continuously for a few seconds then starts to pulse out, then flows, then pulsates ….Is this normal? I’ve been on h9d for DeLonghi’s customer service for nearly an hour!! Xx
