Fun fact: Imperial Knights(those 20 foot tall mechs) were the equivalent of a uniform for labour, carrying heavy stuff around and occasionally being used to fight if all other options were exhausted. Terminator armor, is actually a glorified hazmat suit people in DAoT era used. DAoT era, when humanity was at it’s peak, could match the Pre-fall Eldar in a fight, and that’s saying a lot since the Eldar were essentially created by space gods and had been existing since the dinosaurs.

When you consider the scale of the imperium, a tiny improvement on the production of knives is entire planets worth of resources every year. That's why those guardsmen got a planet. It was was absolutely worth that much.

Old lore of STC’s treated them like wonder blueprints, they were immaculately detailed but n such a way that a normal human could with NO tools OR training, construct and build a functioning piece of equipment. Imagine if you will I give you a book and it’s instructions are so clear you begin working on it for fun and in the end you have constructed a fully functional internal combustion engine, fuel, computer system, castings, EVERYTHING… There is a reason they are so treasured.

You forgot to mention that the those guardsmen were given their very own paradise worlds by the mechanicus for them and their families to live on in early retirement. That’s how valuable these things really are.

technically stc is the blueprint to make the machine that makes things. to put it into more context: the knives he mentions? the 2 scouts that found them? they were given PLANETS for finding the knife stc

If I recall there is a complete STC and AI on board of some huge Ark Mechanicus named Speranza. Though it erased the memory of a techpriest that discovered that, since it doesn't trust Imperium or something.

Fun fact the imperium generally thought a tractor was an unstoppable war machine
And a high power laser pointer as a standard issue weapon
Not to mention they thought mining equipment were unstoppable suits of armor
And fun fact they thought a loader with two legs are fast scouting vehicles
