In 1972 in Victoria, Canada, a rookie policeman wrote a poem for his girlfriend while driving home in his police car. Dave "the Cop" Richardson gave the poem to his friend David Foster, a young aspiring young musician looking for material for his new band, SKYLARK. Foster passed it along to Skylark guitarist Doug Edwards who set it to music. It was the first song Edwards had ever composed.

WILDFLOWER is one of the most performed songs in the history of Canadian popular music. Over 30 years it has sold multiple million copies in more than sixty versions. It's been honored with a BMI Millionaire's Award and SOCAN Classic and Crystal Awards. It is the song that launched David Foster's career.

I'm 59, this song still makes me cry. I've lived it and I'm going through it again. This is so beautiful and profound to me.

Do we even have poetic words like this in our music today anymore?

I brought my wife’s urn home today. She loved this song, but it also said so much about her. She lived in constant pain and endured many periods struggling to breath. I cared for her for several years and watch her deteriorate till she could no longer cope. Yet she always had a smile for all she encountered. She truly paid for a debt she never owed. RIP my Heidi, you are home again…

I don't know how other people interpret this song, however when I was a young girl this song used to make me cry because it reminded of the abuse my mother went through at the hands of my father. I used to feel helpless and wanted desperately to be there for her. Unfortunately due to her own brokenness she pushed me away until I could no longer endure the pain and never saw her again. She has since passed years ago, but I still love her very much, miss her and cry especially when I hear this song.

I am listening as I am writing. On my blind date in the 70’s Brooklyn she told me that Wildflower was her favorite song. I agreed. Wonder where she is today.

My late husband picked this song for his funeral. Just weeks after we found out he was terminally ill, and just 2 weeks before his passing away. I just couldn't believe this one last gift he gave me. These words anabled me to cry xry cry, to finally be able to stand strong at his last farewell....

58 now and grew up with these songs that they just don't make any more. Had to hit pause and go into the other room and hug my love Jan and let her know how profoundly blessed I am to be with her.
This one hits hard. Many dear blessings all

I'm 63 and oh how I miss the world we once knew and took for granted, and the soundtrack that echos in my soul now. This is one of the most epic mile markers in my memory. ❤

RIP Dave Richardson, writer of the lyrics of this great song. Policeman, humanitarian, and poet. All too often we praise the singer, forgetting the artistry of the words. Mr. Richardson you painted an unforgettable picture with these lyrics. May you rest in peace. You blessed many with your words.
