Butch and the Newports are actually the group Gaslight with a name change following problems between Marvin Figgins (CEO  of Grand Junction / Black Rock Records). and some members of the Gaslight.  Kippy, Butch, Tony and Bruce were from the east side of Detroit in the early through mid '70s changed their name to Gaslight upon signing with Grand Junction Records.  Mr. Kelleys Lounge (on Chene) was their hangout, as was that neighborhood. Look up the following tracks by Gaslight: "I'm Going To Get You, " Drifting Away, " I Cant Tell A Lie, " and "Missing You (featuring Tony Mitchell singing a mid tempo baritone lead)"... those were the days...
