You may have had an ammonia spike which can occur naturally, which killed your fish and raised your nitrate

its called an amonia spike it happens when the bacteria colony in your filter has been destroyed meaning when you did your water change you may have changed too much of the water killing your bacteria that digest nitrate

Bless your heart!! I know how it feels to lose your pets. I lost 3 pups on each month. Just know that your fish love you much. I bet in heaven they are watching over you. Just know it’s not your fault. Hope you get better
