My method was using vectors:
Vector joining M1, M2 is
=(Q1+P)/2 - (Q2+P)/2
= (Q1-Q2)/2
Maximum when Q1 and Q2 are on major axis ends.

You won't believe but I did EXACTLY THE SAME by maximizing the length of QQ' which was ofcourse the major axis and yes I cracked the Question in 30 seconds(not so fast as the legend🌝). I did this question in 30 seconds approx after making the diagram :) Same approach I followed

I took a point as a costheta, b sin theta ...then i took 3 symmetrical points in 3 qudrants ...then i found mid point then...found distance and maximize it 4
