Astronomy facts about the Aristarchus lunar impact crater, which lies in the northwest area of the Moon's near side. It is one of the brightest large formations on the moon's surface. Its albedo is almost double that of most lunar features. It is bright enough to be visible to the naked eye. It is also easy to see when most of the surface of the moon is illuminated by earthshine. Aristarchus crater is deeper than the Grand Canyon. It was named after the Greek astronomer Aristarchus of Samos.
