Speaking from an ambulance station in Essex, Sir Keir Starmer has laid out three "shifts" in approach to the NHS.

These include moving care to the community and out of hospitals, setting mindsets on prevention over sickness and moving from an analogue to a digital health system.

He added that Labour plans to "revolutionise" mental health care, improve the provision of school meals, and tackle social media companies to ban vape, junk food and sugary snack advertisements.

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but 'innovation' etc always seems to be euphemistically for privatisation..

But as well in the nhs we need more paramedics as that’s on a low, & we need an increase in new nhs staff as the turnover is ridiculous. The NHS needs to have a lot of investment and it needs to be smart and efficient and not money wasted, there is many issues and nhs pay needs to be increased in order to compete with agency workers who earn a lot more money for a shorter time working in a hospital.

which vision, is it todays, tomorrow, next week or perhaps he should think on it. Bloody hypocrite.

We need to stop people from smoking, drinking alcohol and being obese. People should stop outsourcing things to the government and take control of their own lives. The choices we make have a direct effect on others and our community at large!!

First of all, he needs to stop foreigners using the N.H.S. they should pay before treatment the same as we have to in their countries .

Finally some direction for the NHS!!! As an NHS surgeon watching firsthand how the system is failing patients, I can't say how great it is to hear a commitment to improvement in areas where it is needed, particularly the utilisation of technology (many trusts still use pagers and handwritten forms and notes for everything), a focus on preventative healthcare and on mental health.

This is a vision that gets my vote and it can't come soon enough!

NHS Providers responds to Keir Starmer speech on the NHS
22 May 2023

Responding to the speech today by Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer on his vision for the NHS, Sir Julian Hartley, chief executive at NHS Providers said:

"Trust leaders will welcome ambitious plans for the NHS from whichever party forms the next government.

"They will agree with Labour's goal to reduce waiting times. Trusts have made remarkable progress on the longest waits for planned operations given the recent challenges. However, this goal will only be achieved if it's underpinned by adequate funding for health and care workers as well as for infrastructure.

"We know prevention and early intervention go a long way to help improve people's health and manage demand for NHS services – as proved by trusts delivering effective interventions through community diagnostic centres. Trusts will also welcome the focus on community-based services including for mental health. To boost this work, trusts desperately need more investment in staff and resources.

"Trust leaders will also welcome the emphasis on health inequalities. The NHS is committed to addressing unfair, avoidable differences in people's access to, experiences of and outcomes. It's vital that trusts' different starting points and local circumstances are recognised in a complex and challenging environment.

"We agree that digital and technology can transform healthcare for the better, but investment in both core digital infrastructure and the NHS workforce will be vital for this transition.

"What the NHS needs is sustainable, long-term investment and strategic workforce planning to help it overcome the many challenges it faces."

I trust Starmer as much as I trust the Tories, which is zero.

But he really didn’t say a lot, a shopping list but little actual content.

I don't disagree with his intentions, but I felt that this speech was a bit authoritarian to me. Almost trying to control what people eat and what they view on social media. I agree on the points about GPs and technology in the NHS. I'm not sure how exactly we are world leaders in science and AI though.

Not a Labour supporter but like this a lot. In particularly the emphasis on mental health and prevention.

Where are these people gonna come from? With what money?

All guff he never said were the money was coming from, a part insurance part state funded health service like the more efficient French or Australian health system would be a good solution, so just talk as he won’t admit a more privately funded health service is needed.
