No one in industry would ever think of managing their stock approximatively. Yet this is what has been going on with water consumption of all kinds for decades: potable water, process water, utility water and discharge water. Most industrial infrastructure has been designed as if water were an unlimited resource, similarly to energy before it.

Today, however, water stress is increasingly obvious and blind management of water use is no longer possible. Similarly to many other sectors of activity, data is now at the heart of water use challenges and optimisation in industry. Data coming from a multitude of sensors which is then processed using specific tools.

To increase water efficiency, industrials can work in 3 directions:
• Having better knowledge of their water use: the first optimisation step, the inventory and the quantity and quality assessment of water consumption, uses and discharges using precise mapping that gives a global view of the water cycle for all industrial processes.
• Setting up a collection, processing and analysis system: using the data collected by all those sensors, a digital water management solution (e-water management) becomes a true industrial performance tool, contributing to reducing environmental impacts and risks.
• Controlling uses, even remotely: the multiplication of sites to be managed and the development of telecommuting result in fewer employees being present in close proximity to industrial facilities. Digital solutions provide remote monitoring and alerts, while limiting the need for travel.
To understand how data is central to industrial water efficiency in detail, listen to our experts discuss it between themselves and with our partners on BWT TV.
