A seven-year-old boy has died after a “devastating explosion” in a residential street in Newcastle.

Six people were taken to hospital after the incident in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to Violet Close, in the Benwell and Elswick area of the city, shortly before 1am.

Speaking at the scene, Northumbria Police Supt Darren Adams said: “It is with great sadness that I stand in front of you today following the tragic death of a young child.

Why are so many houses in the UK exploding these days? A gas explosion was a very rare occurrence when I was young.
