Let's be clear: the only reason Manchin or Sinema would agree to help the Democrats instead of obstructing them is this: if Democrats are in the minority, they have ZERO power. Manchin and Sinema are at their most influential in American politics when they are the only ones helping Democrats maintain their majority.

If Republicans gain the majority in the Senate, then it isn't Manchin or Sinema who Democrats will be negotiating with - it's any Republican willing to flip. Assuming the filibuster isn't used.

Basically, this isn't a moment when Manchin or Sinema decided to do something good for someone other than themselves. This is just a politically cynical move to maintain the status quo which isn't good for the country, or anyone that isn't Manchin or Sinema.
