OK, here are my first series of tests with the strakes mod for the Nano Talon, which aims to help improve the roll instability issues, apparently created by the NT's fan nose, which creates turbulence and sends it up over the wings, and apparently that is not a good thing! I printed out a set and did a few flights testing them... not sure what to think, but it would appear that strakes along might not be enough to solve the wobbles completely! Will look into some other mods that I might do in the near future!

There is a mod avaliable now that takes out the dihedral in the wings. This really help more than anything. If you have a 3d printer the files for the parts is on Thingiverse.

If they ever update the nano talon, hopefully they'll get rid of that flutter in a new design.

My Talon showed up this weekend and it was windy all day, but being the impetuous type I flew it anyway just POV and had the same experience. Even in light wind it can start into a violent oscillation when turning, even worse with the stability control on. But then later that evening just before sundown the wind stopped and it flew very smooth for 20 min on a 3s. Today I took it to work and flew it at lunch in 20+ Mph winds and it was very hard to keep it in the air at all, it was bouncing around like a meal moth. The instabiliy seems to be coming from the fact that the control surfaces are so close together and the fuselage is so short. I don't think winglets will help that either, when a cross wind hits the v tail it wants to push it which causes the plane to try to roll rather than swap ends. I have also noticed that the rudder command is very weak and when trying to perform a coordinated turn the plane wants to spin, again another symptom of a short fuselage. Conclusion this may not be the best FPV platform for smooth video even if you add GPS and it will never be inherantly stable. It is a ton of fun to fly though and I love that you can smash into a tree and have it totally expode, then simply pop it all back together and fly again.

the answer is get a heavier or larger plane. the nano talon is ridiculously light while flying in even light wings the mini talon can pretty much drift and fly side ways with any slight breeze

Good comparison Nikola, my results which showed a big difference were at the end of a long line of other mods, and may have been the last necessary link. I flew mine last time without it, turned around and put it on and noticed a difference right away, but the NT does still get knocked around in wind like all of them but It looks like its a combination thing, at least it's cheap easy and reversible if it doesn't work.

Dont you think the main issue is with the "slop and wiggle" of the control surfaces themselves? I believe if the servo linkages where tighter with less slop it would make a HUGE difference.

Here's a suggestion (which I can't test on my Nano Talon as I've already wrecked it). Looking at this early prototype of Zawlade you'll notice it has the same wobbles except worse:
and then in this video you'll see the issue has been resolved with an anhedral mod:
In the case of Zawlade (in video #1) the issue was in the lateral stability. The centre of effort of the vertical stabilizers was higher than the centre of weight. Therefore the heavy point of the plane acted like a pendulum or a swing after each change in direction. This is fine for free flight with no RC control system as it causes the plane to self stabalise and pull flat with the ground. The Nano Talon is not a plane whereby an anhedral mod could be easily applied. However an extra tail plane pointing downward may fix it. A single one may have to be bigger than each side of the V-tail. Maybe add the equivalent upside down V so it becomes a cross tail. Either that, or downward pointing wing tips (fences) which hang to lower than the fuselage. If done right, the wing tips may also give better flight efficiency.
Zawlade weighed in at around 700g, but our other plane Gemot is only around 330g and it's very stable. Yes, weight fixes things because of the inertia associated with mass, but stripping all the weight out really points out how good a planes aerodynamic stability actually is. No fudging it.
