I'm not sure if you're referring to the speed or quality of recall. If it's speed, you can memorise at your leisure prior to a performance which you ensure contains what you memorised.
You needn't necessarily memorise at the speed of a light switch as is ostensibly done here.

the vid wasn't edited, the deck switch occurs at 2:14. Now of course they couldn't show the deck at this time cause it would be obvious to the TV audience, but she is concentrating and looking at his eyes and working on getting her fingers on his face, his hands drop down and he switches the deck. You can tell because the way the deck is stacked before and after the switch. Before its almost a perfect stack but the next time you see the deck there is a slight change in the stack

Also what Derren does brilliantly is misdirection. So what his 'victim' thinks is him allowing her to cover his eyes to stop him cheating... is most likely the point at which he cheats.

The trick is that he has developed or has photographic memory. We do know he has good memory from other trick he does, For example memorizing the english dictionary, counting cards, playing chess against 9 people.

yes I think I agree with you. The thing to know about magic is that the trick you see is never the trick being done. So he does memorise a deck, but the trick is the switch and also the showmanship comes in only recalling part of the deck and pretending its so hard . This is where Derren is king. He could recall the whole deck while drinking a cup of coffee but it would become less believable

He is actually slowing time in his mind. If you ripple a deck of cards in fron of your eyes, it goes too fast for us too see. Its like if you move your hand really fast from side to side it goes blurry. We can only see a certain amount of frames per second. So by slowing time in your mind, i guess it allows you to see things that move too fast for our eyes, but not too fast for the mind.... i think lol.
