"Bird Song"
Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia

All I know is something like a bird
within her sang
All I know she sang a little while
and then flew on
Tell me all that you know
I'll show you
Snow and rain
If you hear that same sweet song again
will you know why?
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet
is passing by

Laugh in the sunshine
sing
cry in the dark
fly
through the night
Don't cry now
Don't you cry
Don't you cry
anymore
lalalada
Sleep
in the stars
don't you cry
dry your eyes
on the wind
lalalala
la........

I think Jerry really loved Janis. I remember that scene from Festival Express when they were all jamming on the train. Jerry took Janis's hand and said something like, I love you Janis, loved you from the first day that I met you. Couldn't you imagine if those two would have gotten together. Blows my mind just to think about it. I hope they are all resting in peace.

I woke up with this song playing in a dream - searched youtube and hit play.  What a way to start the day

Janis was something special, only a band of friends like the dead who shared the whole scene with her can truly touch on the magic she possessed

Thank Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia. Thank Janis. Thank you, my brothers and sisters. We had a High Time. We traveled So Many Roads. We rested at Terrapin and continued on the Golden Road with a Box of Rain through the Black Muddy Water and into the Attics of my Life, Me and My Uncle always following Uncle Johns Band doing the U.S.Blues and into the Morning Dew beyond those Throwing Stones until we met Saint Stephan, our Love will Not Fade Away. Peace.

I've turned my girl on the Dead --she's 64 & cool as hell, but has always thought the band was nothin more than 'Truckin' and 'Casey Jones' and the drinking songs so overplayed back in them days when they was all just hunting in VA w/ the radio. Now she's
heard ' Terrapin' and 'Help On The Way" & "Eyes" etc & wants to know more about what they were really all about. I think I did a good thing today, man.

I’m back here again luving your masterful creativity. You’ve given us a ROAD TRIP…across America…outer space…and inner space. The images you’ve chosen are a music history lesson. There’s nothing left to “dew” for this 75-year young Deadhead…but, smile, smile, smile…😊

God bless Janis Joplin. God bless the Grateful Dead. Some may not like what I just said. But the worry is all in your precious head. 😊🙏🌹

This is the definitive version ! And only Jerry could drop is guitar pick and grab it off the stage floor and never miss a note …like he did at Veneta during this show.

Ah Veneta. Sleepy lil town. Pass it weekly on my way to chase steelhead in the coast range. RIP Jerry, Janice, Brent, PigPen, Scully and my beautiful sister Lori.

Ah, Janis, we miss you so. Thank you Jerry (we miss you too) and Hunter for writing this beautiful song for our beautiful sister and I think she can hear it whenever it is sung.

Out of this world. So beautiful. I am truly grateful to the person who introduced me to GD back in the 80’s he is no longer with us sadly. But here we are. I only wish more people could appreciate the beautiful world that could be. With the help of music like this x
