The sample player (also known as a sampler) is a feature included in most modern DJ software. Most DJs only use it for triggering sound effects like an airhorn, but it can be used to do more creative (and useful) things. We check out three examples of how to use the sample player aside from triggering sound effects in this video.

As a mobile guy, #3 is a very cool idea... I like it a LOT... #1 & #2 are good too but I wish I had known about #3 before since I edited some songs down for use as “walkup” music for when awardees come up to receive an award and sometimes there was a lag if you had to reload the song in the deck... Nice tip!!

You sir are genius. Loading tracks for prepped set for my mobile events is my major takeaway today. Never taught about that. Thank you

great video! I had another technique to add that I've used the sampler for many times as an open-format club DJ---i'll load in 1 or 2 differently keyed 808 Sub Bombs to use as a clean out to do a really quick but major tempo transition--they've also got a a bit of white noise to tail out smoother for good measure--(i just threw these together really quick in Ableton, but one could easily find usable ones by scouring through a few sample packs or by hitting up Splice's site library for a few.

I found this eliminated a huge amount of stress by taking care of the 'how am I gonna get there?' problem we face when there's a request for some mid-tempo hip-hop while you're hovering in the 120-126BPM range playing house. it also enabled me to fulfill the request quicker by making the transition usually by the next song, rather than other times when I'd map out 2 or 3 tracks to change up the tempo and energy in a cohesive and smooth way.

hope some of y'all also find this to be helpful---cheers!

I do the first one, a lot. The second is easier in VDJ, since it auto-syncs the affects to the music for me. I'll have to try the third... Using a touch screen allows me to expand the pads. I've had 16 button on the screen at one time. Real estate on a 24 inch monitor starts to get a bit tight, after that. Thanks, Marc!

Great vid! I am locking exactly for the way to use my RB Sample section as a drum machine. I am just looking for the exact four first samples (the drum, the snare, hihat, ...) Where can I download good basic drum samples. I just found huge collections of different samples ... I am looking for something easy!
