Hello Julian please help me explain if it is je then does it take a sound like jeu or if is te does it take a sound like teu?

I say it exactly like this and get French people telling me in a melodramatic tone that I am saying it wrong but not actually saying it "Correctly" to help me out so now I don't know if this is actually how to say it. Can't find any help on it.
