About me

Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

what coding habits do you do that you think makes a huge difference? 🐈

A big one for me is to always write a small piece, then run the small piece to make sure it works before moving on. Doing the whole thing before checking for errors is a recipe for disaster.

I really like the point you made about flexibility in initial planning; I'll see a lot of coders develop a code base which is not easily reusable under the justification that they "aren't planning to do anything different with this part." Eventually, they'll have to change some aspect of their initial design, and they'll spend hours doing it— something that could have been avoided with a moment's consideration at the beginning.

Just started with coding as a beginner with SQL and I guess it comes to me naturally to document and make notes about snippets. Although I do not read much, I have been practicing 'how to learn' for almost 5 years now, watching my patterns and triggers while learning something. There was also a video by KenJee about it recently that helped me validate my learning habits. Also, love attending the live pomodoro study stream sessions with you. They make it easier for me to focus on things I need to complete without any distraction.

Your videos are extremely high quality. Even among great YouTube creators with millions of subscribers, they are a cut above. I have never found more useful, applicable information from a single person. Thank you!!!

Writing what to do on paper before coding helps me to get in the right mindset and better clarity.

The video you've done here is well planned out I like 6:04 where you move your hands along with the word when you speak about diffuse learning.

Thanks for all your videos! I am a 28yo video tech and i'm studying vfx in my free time and i get to study node programming, which isn't the same, but your videos help motivate me. Before I was that person writing very detailed notes and documenting everything theoretical before actually working on a project. Now i write notes inside the project and copy paste node networks and it helps me to learn faster! Thanks!
A thing that gets me into a mindset is organic black tea with organic oat milk and montezuma dark chocolate! Haha 😸

Such mixed feelings RN.... I'm stoked for a video with Tina talking about coding habits 😄, but upset because I don't live in the UK for the contest! 😭

You raised a very good problem, you need an architect who will tell you exactly what should you do. Most managers consider that architectecting is a waste of money, it is why you need to do this role too. Do you listen to some music when code, or only at stage of preparation? Ask for help? Most people do it when got stuck and no way to move. I do it in an opposite direction, before starting coding, I start ask for help. I explain people what I will try to solve and which approaches are going to use. Then I ask if I do it right, or maybe overlook something, or a solution already exists. People do not give any good suggestion usually, but trying to explain them my problem helps me better solve it.

Adding comments for my future reference is my coding habit and then clean code to make it as clean as it can be .

The best technique I use when learning is: Watching videos at 2x speeds. Its the best!!! No lie, I've been doing this for about over a year and now 2x speeds sounds regular and its a bit irritating with the sense that its going too slow, so now I find myself gradually working up to 3x speeds lol.

Think about it, most of the times when you learn something new, you have to review the source multiple times... so if you can half that time or more, you can avoid that risk of working past your mental threshold and avoid mental fatigue. Also, it affords you the ability to pinpoint critical ideas with a time stamp, you can then shift your focus on sticking point, review other study sources at high speeds to get over that hump.

Yeah it's key to find that time when you fall into the "zone" and really zero in on the important save the less important work for later in the day.
