On Sunday evening, SpaceX founder Elon Musk shared footage taken from a drone of Starbase’s Starship launch tower via Twitter with the caption: "Starship launch & catch tower".
As you can see, the arms have reached the top of the tower!
What a majestic view!!
And now, the question is whether SpaceX is ready to use a "robot wand" on its new Starship rocket.
And then, when will it’s first operation be?

The “chopsticks arm”, known as Mechazilla, exist to provide SpaceX with an any-weather alternative to cranes for lifting, manipulating, and precisely stacking Starships and Super Heavy boosters at the launch pad, with the headline – ever since Musk revealed the idea – to use those same arms to literally catch rockets out of mid-air.
The technique is one of the most ambitious features of Starship - a spaceflight project already breaking new ground.
It is seen as an upgrade over the drone-ships currently used for Falcon 9 boosters returning to Earth after missions.

I think the first catch won't happen till they have a second tower built as Mec can be used quite efficiently as a starship stacker and there would be too much risk if this monolith gets destroyed in a failed landing, however, if there is a second mech then the risk is mitigated. THoughts from the cheap seats

First catch will happen whenever they figure out exactly how best to catch it without causing structural damage. There has to be some sort of landing force. Maybe moving the darn arm is too complex of a solution..

I would love to see the rules that govern the catch do no catch rocket decision and what does the "I give up" action look like. Is there a "Catch it at all cost" mode? Is scraping/crushing the rocket acceptable?

I suppose Chopzilla and the booster will be having discussions as they try to meet....

Is it to be assumed that the catching arms have been designed for both impact loads and static applied loads? Have the tests on the arms also included impact loads.

Step firming in 2022. Mechazilla is amazing. The launch tower animation I believe will be as superb as the extreme tower is already designed

They seem to have the landing accuracy sorted out, presuming they are using the same system as the Falcon 9 which lands so close to the centre X on the landing barge each time 200 km out to sea . Plus even if a landing fails there is not going to be much fuel in the vehicle on landing anyway ideally, so there won't be much of an "explosion " that could damage the tower, least of all topple it ?
