The new Sigma BF is earning praise for its stunning design and premium build — but is it hiding something beneath that sleek exterior? I have a theory: beneath all that machined aluminum, we might just be looking at the internals of a Panasonic Lumix S9.

⚠CORRECTION: The buttons on the BF are haptic, so when it's switched off, this functionality just stops - there's no witchcraft involved. But hey, it sure fooled me! Thanks to everyone who pointed this out! ☺

Lumix S9 is a victim of “pro reviews” for a camera that’s NOT meant for pros.
Meanwhile Sigma BF (or sigma cameras in general) are for the premium/niche market where the compromises are “barely visible” in the eyes of their target market.

Truly a double-standard.

S9 release is something that needs to be studied. It was so hated in the West, meanwhile it's so popular in Japan that the CEO of LUMIX in Japan had to issue a formal apology because they couldn't keep up with the demand. On the other hand I don't remember anyone complaining that much about the lack of mechanical shutter in Sony ZVE10 II. Go figure.

Surely the reason the buttons 'go solid' is because they are touch sensitive areas with haptic feedback to simulate a press, not really button. Like on some phones and the macbooks trackpad when you press it down but feels solid when the machine is off.

sigma went all-in on being seemingly intentionally backwards, and the body design+price cements it as being an outlier product, while lumix released a camera that still firmly presented itself as a professional camera, but cut down for a smaller body + price.

people interpreted the S9 as being compromised while the BF as being unapolagetically different.

• No mechanical shutter
• No viewfinder
• No IBIS (in-body stabilization)
• No hotshoe
• No headphone jack
• No microphone jack
• No HDMI port
• No flip-out screen
• No grip
• No dual strap lugs for neck strap

dont you love how people bashed the s9 for not having mech shutter and no evf.

then doing a 180 and accepting the bf has no mech shutter and no evf either FOR MORE MONEY

forget the marketing . people shouldve been able to dissect the product by itself

the *buttons" are never physically depressed, even when turned on. they are just small touch sensitive areas and the camera vibrates a little bit that gives sense of buttons. just like "home" button of iphone.

I’ve shot the RX1R II for a decade. When I needed a camera for work that had absolutely fantastic workflow and could get amazing shots, I went with the S9 and have zero regrets. With custom LUTs, including all my favorites from RNI all films, it’s a fantastic deal. They’re on sale used for $950 these days.

The S9 is 1199 EUR on the online store, which is an absolute steal.

I don't care what anybody says.. The S9 is a BEAST !!! And funny enough, I personally know WAY more professional filmmakers using it, opposed to not knowing any influencers using it.

Odd how there was so much hate for the S9 yet everyone praising the Sigma BF 😂

I think that people were really aching for Panasonic to announce their mark 2 follow ups to their S line cameras and no one was expecting anything from Sigma and that’s why sigma got a pass and Panasonic caught heat.

The S9 was hated because of its kit lens. The hatred for the lens was well deserved, but it also dragged the camera down in the mud.

I actually own the S9, picked it up through Panasonic UK with a student discount for £1100 as a present for my 21st last month :)

For a compact, full-frame hybrid camera with loads of user-friendly features (like Lumix Lab), it’s honestly not bad value at all.

I’ve used it for both photos and video, and the results have been stunning. There is a bit of a learning curve, but that’s coming from someone who mainly shot with the Expert RAW app on a Samsung phone. I’ve owned Canon cameras before but barely used them.

That’s probably why I didn’t mind the lack of an EVF, I’ve never really got on with them (I think its my long eye lashes, they smudge the glass). I’ve always used a display to frame and control my shots, so switching to the S9 felt pretty natural.

I got the version that comes with a pancake 17–40mm lens with it. It’s super easy to carry around and pretty handy overall. Not the most balanced setup, but honestly, I probably just need to work on my grip strength at the gym lol. (That said, I still reckon the standalone price of that lens at £550 might be the worst value I’ve ever seen.)

4:21 do they actually move? They might just be pressure sensitive and use an haptic motor to make them feel like they press like apple did with the old home button. Can you check that with calipers or similar?

That's wild. Everyone who had a fit over the Panasonic G100 but celebrates the Sigma BF has to apologize immediately.

I personally don´t think it´s pretty. It looks like a generic block of metal. And it´s too minimalistic to be a work tool. All my respects to Sigma as a company though

If I am correct (and thats a big IF) the reasoon the buttons aren’t able to be pressed when the camera is off is due to they actually aren’t physical buttons. the scroll wheel is the closest thing to actual button. When you are pressing those makeshift buttons it actually a hyptic feedback motor and sensor you are interacting with. 4:33

I would never buy a Sigma BF, but when I borrowed the S9 with the 18-40 mm lens, I was surprised by how heavy it felt, and how the whole set didn't really feel that compact, even with the lens collapsed. Compared to some small M43 camera + lens combinations, it was big and heavy. It was like a smaller S5, but without fewer controls and dials, making the whole shooting less pleasant.
