The facial tatoo you showed is a moko and comes from New Zealand not Tahiti it has great cultural signifecance and mana, men had full face tatoos and women chin and lip they must get permission and there are many traditions and rules about how they are appled and how they are worn, hope this info helps.

There is a story surrounding sailors having the crucifiction on there backs in order to avoid a flogging as this would be considerd an act of blasphermy to dissfiger said picture, true or not not sure but sounds plausable.

On a related topic, when I served in the US Navy during the early 1970's I recall a couple of crusty sailors who had a propeller tattooed on each butt cheek ... yikes!

Yes they did. Pearl of the Orient (Manila) was a infamous Pirate port. Lots of tattoo culture in Philippines.
