The darkest old-time murder ballad

Today, we dive into the haunting tale of *Pretty Polly*, a ballad that has survived for centuries, traveling across oceans and through generations. This song, rooted in British folk tradition, tells a dark story of love, betrayal, and murder.

Originally known as "The Gosport Tragedy," the song's early versions featured supernatural elements like Polly’s ghost haunting her killer. But as it made its way into American folk music, the story evolved. In its Appalachian adaptation, Polly is lured deep into the woods by her lover Willy, only to discover a grave he has already dug for her. Unlike many murder ballads, this one is premeditated, making it even more chilling.

We explore how this song’s haunting melody uses Sawmill tuning, creating a tension that mirrors the unresolved dread of the story itself. The tuning's unique sound captures the eerie essence of the tale, making it unforgettable.

If you want to try playing this iconic ballad, I’ve linked the tab at the top. It’s beginner-friendly, perfect for those new to clawhammer banjo, and a great introduction to the spooky world of murder ballads.

🎵 Recommended Versions: Check out Doc Boggs and Ralph Stanley’s interpretations for a deep dive into the song’s chilling vibe.

Enjoy the creepiness, and let me know how you get on with the tab!

Really love hearing the history of these songs- this is the type of history that we will lose if it isn't talked about more and archived in this way. There is so much history to these songs sometimes it feels impossible to grasp!

Can anyone explain why the supernatural elements were dropped in America? I'd really be interested in finding out some theories behind that. I play traditional Irish and sing one called "Banks of Red Roses" with a similar theme.
