How to use the Vernier scale on a miter saw

The little scale on most modern more saws is called a vernier scale, and it's one of it’s most useful, but never really talked about features. With the vernier scale, you can position your blade in 1/4-degree increments to either side of any whole degree, allowing for some pretty accurate cuts!

Thank you for explaining that. My after market miter gauge has a vernier scale and I did not know how to use it...until now.

This is a great one~! I've never paid attention, so I'm going out to see if my Dewalt has this. Thanks much~!

That's pretty cool. My Metabo doesn't have a verneir scale, but if I get a saw with one in the future I'll know how to use it.

My Makita 12-in does not have anything like that. Sadly.

My miter saw varies plus or minus 1.5 degrees, without moving.

It’s like using an old school slide rule.

Another way to demonstrate this: most saws have a hard stop at 22.5deg, so if you engage that 22.5deg stop, the "1/2" on the vernier will land 2deg beyond 22deg...on the 24deg mark.

I'm embarrassed to say that I thought it was just a magnification lens. I've had the same DeWalt miter saw for about 3 years now. LOL

It's called a 'nonius'.
