It's a lfe-style choice. Wonderful decision for me. 2024 figures in San Diego: 39 foot trawler, bought in 2014 was about 15% the cost of an average house in San Diego County. Due to market craziness, it has appreciated in value which is not something one can count on. Slip and live-aboard fee 1260. Boat payment is 610. Diver averages-out to 200 month but that is for three boats (39', 21' and 17') and includes zinc replacement. Water, cable, internet are free. Sewage pumper is 20 bucks per week if one does not want to move the boat to the free DIY pump-out. Insurance is about 1100/year. Maintenance is easy except for the big diesel... if you are a DIY guy in your house you'll be fine on the boat. Routine diesel maintenance is just as easy as routine maint on your car. Cylinder Head replacement (CAT 3116 -single) cost me 7K but that was due to my letting the previous owner off the hook; I had a stipulation in the contract but I screwed it up. Separate boat and engine surveys are a must! One more money-saving tip: Dual engines get you in the slip easier but I am an avowed single screw sailor. I see no reason to feed, cool and maintain two engines when one gets the job done. Also opens-up the engine room so one can move around a bit. I would also look at forgoing a generator unless you anchor-out a lot. An adequately-sized house bank with inverter is adequate for anchoring out for a few days a few times per year. I'm happy to answer yacht/live-aboard questions... CPO, USCG, ret. 10 year live-aboard.

a bad day sitting around the marina is still better than a good day at work somewhere

I live aboard my 66’ sailboat and I took the plunge into solar about 3 years ago. It started small but I recently pulled the diesel and got an OceanVolt motor. Now I’m 100% electric. It’s amazing. It’s expensive upfront but you won’t regret it. Good luck!

About time someone makes a video that helps those looking to live on a boat.

Your channel is a breath of fresh air for this topic. My wife and I are researching buying a motor yacht and putting it in a port such as St Maarten in a few years. Getting the perspective on expenses from someone living this reality definitely helps. Thank you again.

I am a retired ship captain and my wife and I are water people and fixing to go full time live aboard and live not far from you. We checked out some marinas in Mississippi but not to many around gulf shores so any info would be appreciated on places you might recommend, also this is first video from you I've seen but definitely not the last, thanks for doing a great REALISTIC cost video, we're elderly couple and still can do the stuff you mentioned ourselves, who wouldn't want to, thanks again and great video

As a former boat owner, Property Taxes were a major expense each year based on the county the marina was located within.

Thank you for the info. Looking ahead to retirement, would love practical educational videos on how to captain a boat, searching for docking places, how to navigate weather and water depth, etc. Keep up the good life, thank you for sharing!

Greetings sir, first time viewer And subscribed too. I would love to retire on a nice trawler like yours but the wife is just too connected to our house! I shall, therefore, live through your life vicariously!

When I went to Gulf Shores in the 80's a brand new condo was at most 85 K. Thanks for covering your cost.

38 foot carver sportfish in the amazing and beautiful san juan islands of the pnw. 350/month mooreage year round. Water, sewer, wifi, garbage, laundry, showers and base electric all included. $50/month insurance (no hurricanes here) boats paid and i do all my own maint and diving. Catch ur own bait and food :) free parking. But fuel is expensive as is fishing gear addiction

Good video. Subscribed based on your honest assessment of living on the trawler.

How much do you spend on fuel? The trip out to a nice anchorage for example…

So inspiring!! I am planning on making the transition to a sailboat. I'm definitely not looking to spend 100k on a boat. I was shooting more towards 5-8k. I would like to make a living cleaning hulls in the marina. It's my lifelong dream.
