SHELTER FROM THE STORM | Frostpunk Rap!

So I'm a bit obsessed with this game right now... Frostpunk is a game from 11Bit Studios about surviving an eternal steampunk winter apocalypse. It was a nice change to go back and do some more serious lyrics after all the sillier songs I've done lately!

I know I said my next song/video would be a Bendy one but I decided I needed some more time to make the video something special.
So in the meantime, here's a Frostpunk song! I went for a much simpler style of video for this one, much less animation intensive. This allowed me to get something out to you guys whilst you wait for my next Bendy track and also allowed me to experiment with a simpler, more sustainable format that will help me get songs out more frequently than just focusing on big animated projects.
So if this goes well, expect more of these style of music videos in future to keep the content coming between the bigger, complex videos! I'm gonna burn myself out if I keep trying to make every video a full 5 minute animation!

I hope you all enjoy! Lots more things on the way soon!

I love how at the end the citizens just give in and abandon their sense of comfort or humanity in the name of ensuring the survival of future generations. It's at the same time both horrifically depressing and oddly inspiring.

The balls on this man. Drops an absolutely drop dead gorgeous song and in the end says "I hope you liked the song" like a mafia shooting you and saying "I hope you are going to die". Of course I am.

"Burn the incense of our innocence and in a sense we thrive" This dude's alliteration game is on point with Binging With Babish.

I know the song is old, and I know that people have commented on it, but...

"So burn us in the furnace, let our souls ignite the flame/use our bones to stoke the embers, use our blood to oil the chains/We are nothing more than engines, rending flesh to find a way/and as we fall we know we die to light a brighter day"

This entire song is wonderful - the flow is excellent, the lyrics telling, the imagery haunting, but this touches on a deep and personal level. I've struggled, in the past, with finding a sense of self worth in a world hurtling towards the brink. This line resonates with me on a deeply spiritual level, because when it comes down to it, when all hope is lost, all that any one person can do is sacrifice, and hope that their sacrifice is enough to contribute to the survival and salvation of the community. This line, better than perhaps any other I have read or heard, epitomizes what I believe to be the utmost pinnacle of the human spirit - that when the chips are down, with the back against the wall, with no hope of escape, mankind will fight tooth and nail to ensure the survival of others.

Just listened to the remaster, and immediately came here to listen to the original... It really is like how I felt listening to it; the original feels like a worker's song, sung by them, while the remaster sounds more like a modern remix of an old worker's song, using aspects of EDM and similar to jazz it up, but in the remixing it lost some of its charm, for me. All the power to those that like it, but the original will forever be the superior version for me.

"let our souls ignite the flame, use our bones to stoke the embers, use our blood to oil the chains" the most metal line ive ever heard

That final verse, the one everyone in the comments is praising, is something I need to praise as well. Rather than a sense of lives being spent by a power above, it's a defiant self-sacrifice for the future, accepting great suffering but at the same time somehow remaining joyful. That's the truest form of altruism: deliberately, joyfully, and _defiantly_ giving up one's everything for others whom we may never know. Beautiful.

I've listened to this a ton of times and I finally felt the need to post. Shit man, you captured the desperation but also the hope of the game - I love that you entertain both faith and order in your lyrics as well, each line is a little reference to something in the game. That chorus is basically a summary of the game. The Order bit of "fall in line and march in time against the climate, proud" is my favorite partisan line - I love that you portrayed Order as defiance against nature. "An empire forged in the flames of what we gave up" is fucking great. The absolute gut-punch is "So burn us in the furnace let our souls ignite the flame use our bones to stoke the embers use our blood to oil the chains we are nothing now but engines rending flesh to find a way and as we fall we know we die to light a brighter day - every shiver will deliver us deliverance in time burn the incense of our innocence and in a sense we thrive - PRAY THE FUTURE THAT WE'RE BUILDING WILL BE WORTH IT'S WEIGHT IN LIVES so take heed but take no pity as the city must survive". The future being worth its weight in lives is literally all anyone can hope for, so I'm a huge fan of that lyric. Sorry for quoting a big chunk but I really feel you nailed the whole spirit of the game in that. Your lines were great and I really hope to see more of the caliber of this, The House Always Wins and It's a Joy from you!

LYRICS:

Heave lads! Ho lads!
Forget the comforts of home you’re a nomad
We've lost so much since we first started
Are our hearts cold or are we cold hearted?
So pray to your lord or your foreman
That the sun might rise in the morning
They told us hell was warm
But our empire fell for shelter from the storm

On the run from London town
Nothing left but rubble there to plunder now
Torn asunder, buried underground
Beneath the tundra and a hundred weight of brothers drowned
Now we’re gonna need another crown
So huddle round, hunker down, man the shovels, plough
And every hundred paces pray and lay another down
Another mother, son or lover lost, the frost is out -
For lonely drifters in the snow drifts, won’t be scuppered now
Stay devout, tough it out, til the sun is out
Trust the censor, shun dissenters, hunt and flush them out
Keep the faith and trust there’s grace behind the thunderclouds
Or fall in line and march in time against the climate, proud
What are we becoming now?
Is this the life we prayed for?
Time is running out.
There’s nothing left but labour.
We write our future in the ice like it was pen and paper
Leave for future generations more than just a generator
We must never waiver. This is the price we pay for.
Safety one day for our children on the path we pave them
In the end know that history depends
On an empire forged in the flames of what we gave up

Heave lads! Ho lads!
Forget the comforts of home you’re a nomad
We've lost so much since we first started
Are our hearts cold or are we cold hearted?
So pray to your lord or your foreman
That the sun might rise in the morning
They told us hell was warm
But our empire fell for shelter from the storm

Turn your collars to the wind
As our odyssey begins
Feel the ice creeping in until your bones sing
As the tempest descends and your ears ring
That’s the bells of the church that we’re preaching
Now grieving is a luxury we spun to weave our cloaks
Comfort, warmth and plenty feel like centuries ago
The storm won’t crush our spirits like a tent beneath the snow
Every upper lip gets stiff at 20°C below
No gold or silver, coal’s the only thing of worth to me
The only precious metal to our name would be the mercury
That fragile strip of burgundy that ever hurtles to the deep
Alerting us as Mother Nature’s taking every cursed degree
I’ve nothing left, my only treasure is my word to keep
Keep bellies filled, treat the ill and preserve the heat
But can I keep the peace as we bleed through adversity?
How’s a shepherd supposed to lead
without a dog to herd the sheep?
These choices that I make, I make to save our nation
What’s a little sawdust when you face annihilation?
Is childhood so sacred? Or just resources wasted?
Every value that I thought I had debased and razed to save us

Heave lads! Ho lads!
Forget the comforts of home you’re a nomad
We've lost so much since we first started
Are our hearts cold or are we cold hearted?
So pray to your lord or your foreman
That the sun might rise in the morning
They told us hell was warm
But our empire fell for shelter from the storm

Growing up they told no two snowflakes are the same
And every one's a wonder, something not to take in vain
Of mother nature's beauty.
Of the universe at play.
Seems she's abstained from duty, left us here and turned away.
Fingers splintered into kindling and hearts as dark as coal
As heat and hope are dwindling we march towards our goal
Committed to the hymns we sing so after all is told
The generations after us aren't cast into the cold
So burn us in the furnace, let our souls ignite the flame
Use our bones to stoke the embers.
Use our blood to oil the chains.
We are nothing now but engines rending flesh to find a way
And as we fall we know we die to light a brighter day
Every shiver will deliver us deliverance in time
Burn the incense of our innocence and in a sense we thrive
Pray the future that we're building will be worth its weight in lives
So take heed but take no pity as the city must survive

Admittedly, I'm late to the party & have never even heard of the game before but this song is a goddamn anthem, a dark dystopian cautionary tale woven by an expert lyricist and I'm loving every second of it. If I was the developer, I'd patch it right in, either for the credits or the title sequence.

No, it's really _that_ good.

"Burn the insensce of our innocence and in a sense we thrive" holy crap, that's unironically fucking genius. Stupendium, you are the unchallenged master of alliteration.
