- What is Penicillin V ( Pen Vee K )?

- Penicillin V (Phenoxymethyl Penicillin, Penicillin V Potassium) is an antibiotic that inhibits mucopeptide synthesis of bacterial cell wall.

- It is available as 250 and 500 mg tablets. And also available as 125 and 250 mg/5ml oral suspension.

- It is indicated principally for upper respiratory-tract infections, for streptococcal tonsillitis, scarlet fever, and for continuing treatment following parenteral therapy with penicillin.
- Also used in the prophylaxis of recurrent rheumatic fever, prophylaxis of pneumoccocal infections.

The usual dosage of Penicillin V for
- Child under one year: 250 mg/day in 2 divided doses
- Child 1 to 6 years: 500 mg/day in 2 divided doses
- Child 6 to 12 years: 1 g/day in 2 divided doses
- Child over 12 years and adult: 2 g/day in 2 divided doses
