The BEST Cataract Surgery Lenses Options - Doctor Explains

Thinking about having cataract surgery? Learn about the newest technologies and what may be the best cataract surgery lenses options for you!

Cataract surgery offers various lens options to replace the cloudy natural lens affected by cataracts and restore clear vision. The most common choice is a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL), which provides clear vision at one specific distance (usually either near or far), requiring patients to use reading glasses or glasses for distance vision, depending on the lens chosen. Alternatively, multifocal and accommodating IOLs are available, allowing for improved vision at multiple distances without glasses, though they may not provide as sharp vision in each range as monofocal lenses. Toric IOLs are designed to correct astigmatism, enhancing vision quality. Ultimately, the choice of cataract surgery lens depends on the patient's vision needs, lifestyle, and their surgeon's recommendation, as each type offers distinct advantages and trade-offs.

My dog developed cataracts in both eyes and went blind due to her diabetes. I got her cataract surgery and she's got 20/20 vision now. Cost me $4k but so worth it.

I'm fascinated by this - I had cataract surgery with lens implant in one eye about 4 years ago. It was amazing - painless and instant and permanent improvement in vision in that eye. I had expected to have to cope with some sort of artefacts in vision because of the artificial lens but there was nothing at all - my field of view is perfectly clear. Because I'm in the UK this was free, fortunately.

Dr. Allen I'm a Truck Driver and also I have my Pilot License. I have had a Eye Exam by a Board Certified Opthalmologist in Jupiter FL. He examined me and saw I have Cataracts in both eyes which causes my Vision to feel as if I'm looking through Low Fat Milk. He suggested a Procedure to remove Caterates and replace both Lenses with Toric Lenses. Your Video was spot on in great detail.

Thank you so much, I just went through Lasik and cataract surgery one month ago and still struggling with clarity of vision. But I went into the surgery with a very high astigmatism. I would do anything to be able to grab my contact lens and use it again but I can't do that so I will continue to hydrate my eyes and hope for clarity after 6 weeks. You're extremely informative and a pleasure to watch

In September of 2021 I had laser-assisted cataract lens replacement surgery performed on both eyes at the same time with Panoptix multi-focal lenses. The outcome has been spectacular. I now have 20/20 distance vision, and 20/15 close up. For many years prior I wore soft contact lenses and needed reading glasses when wearing the soft contacts. If I was wearing my regular glasses, in order to read I would take off my regular glasses to see close up. Now, at 68 years old I see extremely clearly at all focal lengths. As an over-the-road truck driver with doing tons of night driving I was concerned about potential star burst patterns, but found them to be of little to no concern. Depending on the brightness and the angle of lights at night I could sometimes see circular rings around bright lights, but not always. At this point two years later, they rarely show up. I did a lot of YouTube video research before the surgery, watching many videos on both sides of the potential issues and side effects. I would NEVER suggest anyone have elective eye surgery such as LASIK. However, if one needs cataract surgery that’s a different story. For anyone needing cataract surgery, I would suggest doing lots of their own research and know up front to the best of their ability what potential side effect they personally might or might not find bothersome. No longer carrying around glasses and constantly putting them on and taking them off has easily been the greatest benefit. By the way, I was back at work as an over-the-road truck driver 48 hours after surgery.

Last month I had cataract surgery in both eyes (two weeks apart), and opted for the Clareon Vivity Toric IOL inmplants. I have been very VERY happy with the results. Life changing.

Seeing as I am 70 and my last few eye examiners said I had cataracts and to be honest I am not too eager to have eye surgery, or any surgery for that matter. This is a wonderful and timely analysis of this topic. Well done Sir!

Like your explanation. I had multifocal lenses put in and after about a year or more, both lenses were covered with protein deposits which had to be removed with a Yag procedure. The procedure was quick outpatient and it worked. I understand not everyone gets this protein build up but some do. Your vision starts getting clouded again. Not to worry just get the Yag.

I had multi-focal implants done about two years ago. Before the procedure I could not read hardly anything Could not read a decal under the hood of a car (I am a professional mechanic) but now I can read prescription medicine bottles fine print at 12 inches. I can see perfectly at all ranges.. Do not need glasses anymore ever. I can see like a 10 year old kid can see the ice cream man at any distance. The halos sere large for a year but now 75% of the halos have been deleted by my brain. The halos never really bothered me actually. Best money I ever spent on myself.

Excellent information in your videos. Today I visited my third Ophthalmologist over the past year in search of a concise diagnosis and explanation of my slowly worsening eyesight. The first two doctors recommended cataract surgery ASAP, but I was not experiencing most of the commonly described symptoms of cataracts, which left me confused. Luckily, before this latest visit I found your web site and learned much more about cataracts so that I could ask the right questions of today's eye doctor. Between your very good videos and the good fortune of finding a doctor who had the patience to explain my situation, I learned that cataract surgery will one day be a necessity, but is not now urgent. Thank you for the detailed info - it really helped!

My advice to other patients is to beware of surgery mills (who I suspect recommend cataract surgery to just about anyone who walks through their doors), and ask lots of questions before you submit to surgery!

The problem with multifocals is this: the peripheral portion of this lens is usually blocked by iris under the bright sun light and you have to use reading glasses or sun glasses to read. My daughter has this issue.
I also had a cataract removed - first on left eye 10 yrs ago and then I’ve lost IOL in this eye 3 yrs ago in car accident . I had 3 surgeries: first on removal of the old IOL and then implanting a new IOL into the anterior chamber, promptly followed by its removal. After that I’ve completely lost all vision in this eye. 5 yrs ago I had cataract removed on my right eye and now, after 5 years I have IOL in this eye shifted down by about 2 mm. It looks (as much, as I still can see) I am gradually going blind. So, my advice to all of you - don’t rush with your cataract surgery and stretch time as much as you can. Remember it is not such a simple operation, as it looks on this video, and, besides, not all doctors are good doctors, especially, while they are working hard on their own assembly lines to maximise production (mainly money) .

Dr. Is it possible to have updated lens surgery if a better product becomes available years after the first lens surgery? Please advise.

This was an incredible educational video!
You are an excellent teacher and you have a way of making the information interesting. Thanks for dealing this. I’m getting ready to have cataract surgery and I feel much much more confident now and I do know so much more about things I didn’t know to ask, but now I’m glad I know I need to know .😊

This was super helpful, thank you so much for putting it together. I'm having cataract surgery starting next week and I choose the LAL. I've been nervous about it, but I feel better about my choice after seeing your presentation. Though I have to say, it totally irritates me that insurance won't cover these enhanced lenses, it's not like it's cosmetic surgery.
I love this channel!

I had this done about 2 years ago thanks to the VA. I have lenses that they approve of and I love it. I do use 2 power reading glasses, but I still can read without them if necessary. The colors will jump out at you after you get this done.
