This is very true. I saw this happening realtime in Tokyo. Companies from America you would think would do well would struggle using the American model like Wendy's, Burger King and Subway, they kept having to change it, do renovations, change locations and "Japanasize" the menu and standards to survive. The companies that keep testing like that through trial and error eventually figure out the distinct Japanese taste. If you go to Tokyo today and try out those mentioned restaurants you'll find multiple menu items completely unavailable in the North Americas.

I have a business that is all over the world and this video gives excellent advice. The biggest bitch is different languages. Google translate will be your best friend but sometimes it just won't cut it. If it's a real important message find someone to actually translate it.

Different cultures are also very different from what you think. Everything in your culture you think is normal everywhere, but meanwhile another country might have the exact opposite views. It will be very difficult to learn a totally new way of thinking, especially since it goes against what you have spent your life learning. All your designs, products, etc are all based on the country you're targeting. Your brand is important, but it has to fit in the new country, too. For example, if you're proud to have American workers building your stuff and the new country you're going to hates American you're gonna have to switch the brand message there.

Also, another major problem that wasn't mentioned here was time differences. I get most of my emails at around 1-3am because that's when other countries start work compared to where I live. If you start doing a lot more work in another country it is important to know the best times to do things. Even for social media postings you may have one page post at 4pm and another country page be posting at 8am. It's very important not to screw this up. The time change is another big problem to watch for as not all countries do it. You'll just get use to the time difference of a certain country and all the sudden time change happens and the time difference is different again.

Hey Pat, another great video thanks! I would add an 11th point related to point number 10: IT systems. Typically, during expansion, a CEO can't have access to all the critical data (sales results, manufacturing, profit & loss, inventory, etc) without having an efficient business management software (called an Enterprise Resource Planning software) in place. Usually going to a new country forces organizations to do so to standardize best practices across all its subsidiaries. SAP, Oracle, Netsuite, salesforce, pipedrive, hubspot, etc are examples of systems that support the growth of any company in any industry. I am of course the owner of an ERP consulting company called ERP Happy, this led me to react to that video 😊. From a proud valuetainer! Cheers

There's a good reason. You can have the most positive impact in a close geographic range. You conserve capital and resources. Less negative impact on the environment.
So sure, it's okay to have a global impact, as long as it's positive. But until you've got your home garden growing, there's no point in trying to tend one overseas.:)
