Hagrid is Secretly RICH - Harry Potter Theory

When we think of WEALTHY individuals from the Harry Potter story there are a few people and/or wizarding families that come to mind.

First and foremost: The Malfoys- a wealthy, pureblood wizarding family known for their influence in the wizarding world and their affiliation with dark magic. The Malfoys built their immense wealth in 1066 when their distant ancestor, Armand Malfoy, arrived in England with William the Conqueror.

Next up, we’ve got the Lestranges—another wealthy pureblood family whose immense generational wealth only doubled upon intermarriage with another pureblood family, the Blacks.

“The old goblin obeyed, pressing his palm to the wood, and the door of the vault melted away to reveal a cave-like opening crammed from floor to ceiling with golden coins and goblets, silver armour, skins of strange creatures, and a skull still wearing it's crown.”

And finally we’ve got the Potters. Harry Potter’s wealth in the Harry Potter story is certainly no secret- and we’re exposed to it as early as the Philosopher’s Stone- when we’re first introduced to vault 687 at Gringotts. Harry has piles and piles of gold- and his immense wealth is mentioned time and time again throughout the Harry Potter story.

As it turns out, the Potter family fortune started with the founding Patriarch of the family, Linfred of Stinchcombe, a revolutionary potioner that began to amass riches in the Potter name. Following him in the family business was Fleamont Potter, Harry’s grandfather, who had all sorts of success of his own.

And it seems like these few wizarding families, who touted generational wealth that had been amassed by their ancestors before them, are the only examples of ‘rich’ wizarding families in the Harry Potter story.

But what if I told you that there was a man out there FAR wealthier than all of these families COMBINED…AND that he lived in a run-down old shack on the Hogwarts grounds.

Enter: Rubeus Hagrid.

You forgot to mention the double salary when Hagrid takes the post as professor for Care of Magical Creatures in Harry's third year.

Another hint at Hagrid's wealth - he seems to spend a lot of time in 'the pub' and enjoys a drink or two.
As someone who spent a lot of his youth in pubs, I know that the tab can add up! 😂

He also gambles. Given he seems to win a lot of these bets, it can also be assumed that he is skilled at gambling, giving him another 'income' - even if he just views it as a game.

I've heard this theory before. Basically, Hagrid has been working at Hogwarts for many, many years, but pretty much finds his own food in the forest, or just eats at the school. He doesn't really want much in terms of "creature comforts". So....just add up years and years of pay, and no outlay. That means Hagrid is really Swagrid.

I thing Hagrid didn't care about money. He cared more about animals than anything else. It could be that he spent every penny on getting rare animals. There is also the thought of his father. I'm sure he got a fair bit from him. His mother probably didn't have any money as giants are more likely to live in the wild and get everything they want like Hagrid did. There was also the flying motorcycle that couldn't have been cheap. So as to if he had money I don't think he cared if he did or not.

I assumed hagrid had between 1 galleon and 957, 888, 473, 901 galleons. I like to have a wide margin for error.

I think it’s true that he’s saved most of his salary but I don’t see Dumbledore showing him favouritism with an especially high salary, I think he’d be fair to all the teachers and overall I think it’s likely to be a fair but modest salary. And I don’t see Hagrid running any sidelines in dealing in unicorn hair, creatures or anything else. He likes a simple life and just doesn’t really care much about money. And although he doesn’t buy fancy things I can see him spending a fair bit of time in the three broomsticks and the hogs head on his evenings off, so he’s spending on beers and the odd card game too I bet haha (like when he won the dragon egg). So I think he has a fair bit put by, but certainly not riches!

Hargid pays a fortune for his creatures. That's how he spent his money

I would think Hagrid would be allowed to learn Magic and perform Magic once Kingsley and Hermione become Minister of Magic.

It strikes me as more likely that Hagrid was the sort who simply didn't think money was terribly important, and had access to rare resources by way of close association to magical animals and working with his hands. A modest income untouched over time would yield enough to gift an ultra rare white owl, but the other resources he had on hand were gathered from the dark forest.

Hagrid explicitly says he's "in the trade" of dealing with hard-to-get or even illegal (dragons) critters. He's raising, catching and selling such critters on the "black" or maybe "grey" market. Dumbledore wouldn't care as long as Hagrid keeps it reasonable. He might even see Hagrid as a successor to his old friend Newt Scamander.

I think this might be a misunderstanding of wealth. While being frugal and saving over many years can make you very comfortable, at the level of those wizarding families you have probably made several clever investments and have mailbox money coming from every direction. When you hear about obscene amounts of wealth that rich people have its not like they have a bank account somewhere with that number in it. Its an estimation of what they could have if they liquidated everything. Properties, businesses, shares in god knows what. Hagrid doesn't strike me as a shrewd Invester. More like he could have hoarded a small fortune. All of the respect and privileges you pointed out I could write off to his relationship with the headmaster.

I like to think that Dumbledore secretly doubled his salary just because he knew he innocent and wanted to help him by the means of being able to provide him with enough wealth for if he was to retire/get married, he would never have to worry about money ever again. And considering he is half giant, he will be alive for a very long time.

The one thing the Wizarding world does not seem to have, is a social security-network. If you get the cold shoulder and your wand is confiscated or sth, you really are on your own and helpless very soon. You kind of need to be a hustler to some degree to survive in a world like that

I'd say Hagrid could be rich if he sold all the unicorn hairs and other creature parts he collects in the forbidden forest but he doesn't sell them so not liquid / financially rich

Let's not forget the Potter wealth being added to by the Black family wealth, as Harry was Sirius' heir.

It would have been funny if it turned out that Hagrid was financially richer than the Malfoys. But if that was the case, he probably could have saved Buckbeak from being executed. Even if Hagrid didn't realize he was rich or didn't care, you'd think word would have gotten out that he was loaded and people would have been hounding him for money. I don't think this theory is true but there could have been a lot of fun moments in the books if it was true.

My question is why isn’t Fluffy mentioned again. The three headed dog doesn’t die in the philosopher’s stone.

Another hint at his wealth is how familiar he is with the currency. Let's be real, 17 Sickles in a Galleon and 29 Knuts in a Sickle is an absolute mess to calculate. And yet, Hagrid seems to have no trouble with it despite not exactly presenting himself as the sharpest tool in the shed. Almost as if he handles money quite often

This makes sense. Also he seems like the type that wont throw away any money he was given or earned and would just put it all away in savings even if he hates money because he is a very greatful person and once he started saving he couldnt stop. Also he might hate spending money on himself. Mabe he wanted to buy the dark forest but then realized he already is free to take care of it so then he kept saving
