If you want to be able to trace along the length of the cable, getting a loud signal and not just when you touch the probe to the bare copper at the end of the cable. What is blocking the signal is the high twist rate of cat 5 UTP cable and up, so if you attach the tone generator across one pair, the twist in the pair creates a shielding effect cancelling out the tone. If you clip the tone generator to say the blue and the other clip to any other cable except the wht/blue the tone will not be blocked along the length of the cable so you can trace end to end. You can go as far as connecting say all the blues and oranges to one clip and the greens and browns to the other to maximise the signal from anywhere on the cable.
