He played a tune called The Moon and Seven Stars. The fife was in the wrong key though so it sounded odd.

FYI: the Yamaha C Fife is actually a keyless piccolo! Real fifes have six fingerholes only--similar to the pennywhistle/tinwhistle.

In fairness what they gave him wasn't a fife. Those have 6 fingering holes (insert sexual innuendo here) and one thumb hole on the bottom. What they gave him was a flute/fife hybrid from Yamaha with 7 fingering and one thumb hole. It's actually a fun instrument to play and great for practicing your embrouchier (spelling?), the placement of your mouth and how to blow, but you can't just hand it to a flutist or fifer and expect them to play it well.

Maybe it wasn't the usual fife but it probably wasn't a bad one either if it really was the yamaha, even though it costs almost nothing. Wouter Kellerman makes great music on those cheap flutes. Apart from that: Just because you're not able to play a new instrument well right from the start doesn't mean it's a bad instrument.
