"executive produced by Mel Brooks (who was uncredited, to avoid audiences anticipating the film being in the vein of his comedic works, although his company Brooksfilms is in the opening credits

What an absolutely insane thing that must've been to hear from MEL BROOKS when you make films the way Lynch did. Must have been absolutely invigorating

"You're a madman, I love you" If I heard Mel Brooks say that, I would die in the spot, can't get better recognition than that

I like how Mel brings up his use of symbolism because it's probably Lynch's greatest talent. While his work is still full of mystery, there are plenty of scenes, where if you do the work as a viewer, it WILL tell a comprehensive story. It's not opaque for the sake of being opaque. I feel like that's the single biggest issue for any filmmaker. Can the viewer put it together or is it so dense that only the director could tell you what's going on in the scene/film? It's a tightrope. You don't wanna spoonfeed but you also don't wanna alienate. Lynch was a master at that, along with Kubrick, Hitchcock, Cronenberg and a few others.

Couldn’t agree more! Lunch’s symbolism is very clear, almost as if he’s actually helping us to psychoanalyse him. I aspire to being able to capture my unconscious as effectively.

The first of his films I ever saw was The Elephant Man. I was a child and it was new, just released on vhs. It's only beginning to occur to me how much that inspired my young mind.

'You're a madman, I love you. You're in." That's got to be the most amazing praise. Just finished Twin Peaks season two and can't wait to watch Fire Walk With Me.

So crazy to think that the main actor in Eraserhead is the same man who plays Pete in Twin Peaks, what a legend!

When people tell me they love film, the first movie I mention is the elephant man. Visually and symbolically the finest movie I ever saw. Lynch could tell that man’s life so literally yet simultaneously connect us to so many bigger ideas. He was a genius.

The thing about Mel brooks while he gives off the impression he’s a comedian he absolutely has respect and love for classic horror to transmit complex ideas to film. It’s why young Frankenstein was so good because it understood the genre. Mel brooks made and produced a ton of horror movies but never wanted to put his name on them so he doesn’t muddle the impression the film gave. He cared more about the film then he did the credit

When he saw Eraserhead, Mel had made Young Frankenstein just a few years before. One thing these films have in common is the care taken with the beautiful black-and-white cinematography. I think Mel appreciated fine craftsmanship and wanted to give the kid a shot at the big time.

We lost a true legend. Many have tried, but very few will come close to his brilliance. Rest in peace David Lynch! 🙏
