The 2023 Youth Event for the International Day of Peace serves as a platform for young individuals to showcase their tangible efforts and commit to future actions aimed at advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting a culture of peace. The event's theme, "Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals," underscores the imperative for both individual and collective responsibility in urgently nurturing peace.

Annually observed on September 21st, the International Day of Peace is a global commemoration recognized by the UN General Assembly. It is dedicated to strengthening the principles of peace and involves a 24-hour period dedicated to non-violence and cease-fire, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence and cooperation among nations.
-------
Addressing a youth event to celebrate the International Day of Peace, United Nations Messenger of Peace Michael Douglas today (14 Sep) said, “peace and sustainable development are inextricably linked. You cannot have one without the other. And you cannot have either without the participation of everyone.”

The Academy Award-winning actor and producer said, “today as the world faces the largest number of conflicts since World War Two” and stressed that it was essential “to have an organization like the UN on the vanguard of this work.”

Speaking directly to young people, Douglas said, “society is changing with incredible speed. And you are the ones who can best harnessed that change. You all hold enormous power to make this world a better place to live in. Whatever the failures or the generations pass, we hope that you, the next generation to take up this responsibility, can help us write the ship right.”

Douglas is focused on disarmament issues, including nuclear non-proliferation, and halting the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons. In his capacity as a Messenger of Peace, Douglas hosted a documentary filmed in Sierra Leone that was part of a United Nations / Showtime ten-part series titled “What’s Going On?” that helped bring attention to the plight of child soldiers.

In her address to the event, the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, Jayathma Wickramanayake, gave her vision of a peaceful world.

Wickramanayake said, “for me, it is a world where every young person can attend school without the fear of violence or conflict, a world where every young person can do a job that they love, that every young person can love or marry or live with the person that they choose to love, where everyone can advocate safely for their rights, and where everyone is safe from the impacts of climate change, where everyone has equal opportunities for a decent living everywhere.”

Wickramanayake was appointed as the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth in June 2017 at the age of 26.

Xiye Bastida, a climate activist from Mexico, said, “peace is the ability to breathe clean air and drink clean water. Peace is the ability to take care of your territory without repercussions. Peace is the ability to dream up a future and imagine joy. Peace is the ability to tell ourselves the truth: extraction, waste, fossil fuel burning, and the magnification of the climate crisis is the reflection of a broken system. Peace is the bravery to imagine that better world and have the courage to implement it.”

Bastida said, “for a world free of violence of heat waves, for a world free of the violence of hurricanes, for the world free of the violence of sea level rise and flooding. For a world free of extraction and exploitation, a world that is defined by love. Let us unite and take bold steps towards a future and with a pursuit of harmony, not profit.”

Bastida is a 21-year-old climate justice activist based in New York City. She is an organizer with Fridays for Future and the co-founder of Re-Earth Initiative, an international youth-led organization that focuses on highlighting the intersectionality of the climate crisis.

Each year the International Day of Peace (IDP) is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

This year’s theme is Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals.

It is a call to action that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster peace. Fostering peace contributes to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will create a culture of peace for all.

"إن سم الحرب يصيب عالمنا، ويعرض حياة الملايين للخطر، ويقلب الناس ضد بعضهم البعض، ويحرض أمة على أمة، ويقوض الأمن والرفاهية، ويعكس مسار التنمية. كما أنه يدفع بأهدافنا المشتركة للمستقبل أبعد وأبعد (عن المتناول)".
