balance decks are where it's at right now.  I don't see many of them and haven't seen any on icydeck but here is how I run my mage deck.  I have enough early cards to mulligan for to get me choochoofreeze, spare parts, secrets and the elementals for turn 3/4.  Then I have some freeze, my secrets use counterspell, dupe an opponents played card and misdirect a spell.  I keep one ice block in for the times I need illuminator heals or one more turn to win.  I have fireballs, a flamestrike, 2 area freezes (4 and 6 point).  Then I have some end game with dr.boom, ragnaros, archmage and kelthuzad.  Pretty much if I can avoid getting swamped early I usually win.  the balance deck I run has about a 65-70% win rate.  It beats pretty much all warlocks and rogues, has trouble against some hunters, locks down shamans and druids a treat and the only class that really gives it trouble is a priest.  However if I play super aggressive against them (when able) they tend to be able to do nothing until turn 10.  So my point is a good mix is better for long term.  Maybe in arena this is different but fuck arena.  fuck it in the ass.
