I think the Les Paul guitars lived up to their reputation as beautifully sustaining instruments, placing two in the top 3.
The big surprise, however, was the Epiphone! 😁

lol gibson fanboys, for better sustain "downgrade" to epi.

The LP got it's reputation of sustain from the "Beano" album, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton. It was the loud volume Eric used causing the notes to sustain because of controlled feedback, not because of the type of guitar. That technique can sustain notes infinitely if done properly.

That WAS interesting. That Epiphone is beautiful!

This is the way to make a video....no frills or bullshit....just great information.  You could have dragged this out forever like some do and you summed it up quickly.  Well done!

in a lot of les paul sustain tests especially the one by rob chapman the epiphone guitars always had the most sustain

wouldn't string condition, guitar setup, picking intensity and probably number of other variables really result in this test not being accurate ?

None of these guitars stand a chance against my Boss CS-3. I choose when the sustain ends not the guitar.

There's a term called "dead spot", which refers to combinations of frets and strings where the guitar sustain just dies super fast, and I mean super, fast. Every guitar in the world have at least a few, even high end guitars (although it's supposed that the more high end the guitar is, the less dead spots it should have). And it doesn't even depend on the guitar model! It is a particular thing on every individual guitar. Also, the tuning and the strings gauge can affect them, for instance: my Schecter Banshee Elite have a super notable dead spot at the 14th fret on the B string when it's tuned to E standard with .09 strings set, but when I put a .10 set and tune it to Eb standard, that dead spot moves to 15th fret and same string. Really crazy. Something you'd like to check before buying a new guitar. Every guitar will have them! But check that they're only a few in the whole fretboard 😉

I'm not entirely sure what was proven here. So many variables not discussed. Did they all have the same string guages? Can you be sure of your consistency in pick attack? How were the tone/volume nobs set and does a change in these alter the time of sustain? Were all the guitars correctly set up and saddled? Seemingly you had to manually stop the record, could you have been a bit off in some tests?

I actually own two Epiphone Les Paul, the Custom and the Standard. I love those guitars because they play so great and true that the sustain is just outstanding. Thanks for the vid and keep up the good work.

There's another video from andertons here on youtube, they also compared a few les pauls, and the epi is the one that has the most sustain by far, I wonder if it got something to do with the angle of the headstock.

Very interesting test. I sold my Epi to a friend last year. Didn't want to but he really wanted it so I was nice about it and sold it. I knew that guitar was great cause I went through a whole pile of them and chose that one cause it just seemed to have that certain something. Great video. Cheers.

I mentioned on an earlier episode you did from a few weeks back that I had an Epiphone Les Paul Standard & how much I thought the guitar sounded as good as a Gibson, and that was with the stock pickups.

In my case, I also mentioned that I swapped the stock pickups for the Zakk Wylde 81/85 's a few years ago and that now the tone & sustain of the guitar is out of this world! It was cool to see that even with the stock pickups, the Epiphone came in first for all 3 tests.

Thanks for this as well as all the other videos you continue to make. It's one of the only reasons I look forward to Monday's!
