We were all taught to go to school, get good grades, get a post-secondary education, find a stable job with benefits and a pension, retire and die.
That’s how most people walk through life. We think the more we work, the more money we will earn, the better life will get.
But remember back when you were 18. Life wasn’t all that bad. You didn’t have all the luxuries in life, but you were happy.
You enjoyed the simple things in life and the freedom to finally be out on your own.
As we grow older we want different things in life and what use to make us happy now seems to be revolting.
So we work harder and harder. Eventually that Honda Civic isn’t enough anymore because we want to impress our friends with a new Mercedes.
That two bedroom condo isn’t enough anymore because we need a bigger house to store all our new things.
The more we work, the more we earn, the more our expectations go up and the more difficult our lives become.
Want to know why so many rich people are unhappy? Because they have so much to loose.
They’ve worked so hard to buy so many things and can’t bear the fact of losing them.
So they live in constant stress. How will I make my mortgage payment? How will I pay my car lease? How can I afford to fix my motorhome?
But once you strip all of that away you feel free. It’s like taking all the crap out of a big heavy backpack and only carrying what you absolutely need.
You feel they sigh of relief. It’s a lot harder for things to go wrong once you’ve eliminated all the things.
You now don’t need to worry about your motorhome breaking down on the side of the road, cause a tent will do just fine.
You don’t need to worry about buying a new Mercedes because your true friends will still love you no matter what you drive.
You don’t need to worry about moving all your stuff into a new big house with a three door garage because you’re comfortable in your little apartment and can downsize to make it work.
What I’m trying to say is stuff won’t make you happy. It only causes more stress and misery in your life.
Instead, you should be replacing all that stuff you’re buying with experiences.
Remember #YOLO
It might sound nice to buy a brand new 70” tv, but I assure you that trip to the Grand Canyon with your best friends will be what you remember for the rest of your life. Not the tv in your living room.
It might sound nice to add another outfit to your overflowing closet, but I assure you feeling the wind across your face as you throw yourself 12,000 feet out of an airplane will be a memory you never forget.
So the next time you reach into your wallet to take out that credit card really think about whether that purchase you’re about to make will better your life.
Obviously, we need food and shelter to survive that’s without saying. But I’m not talking about the necessities.
I’m talking about the “STUFF.” The stuff we spend our hard earned money on.
Take your stuff budget and replace it with an experience budget.
Go out and try new things you’ve never done before.
Forget about another new pair of shoes and sign up for a cooking class. Forget about another new car and take a trip to somewhere you never thought you would ever go to. Forget about working overtime to make more money you don’t need and take your kids fishing.
Stop buying stuff, start buying memories.
