I'm pretty sure working head and tail lamps could be fitted. DCC Concepts do working scale dual element LED lamps which change from white to red depending upon direction traveled. They have three very thin wires (motor lacquer coated winding wire). Very fiddly but doable. Or, use a fibre optic flexible rod leading to a hidden LED light source. That's what I did on my Hornby GWR Autocoach. Said products are sold by DCC Supplies.
