I realized Joi was a metaphor for social media, porn, video games, and other things way too late. Even if they are fake and shallow and prevent you from engaging with genuine people, they are always there for you and will remain committed to you.

I like that she reacts extremely positive towards the gift bought for her that is made by her manufacturer, this would encourage more gifts being bought for her that were created by the manufacturers. Many hundreds of beings around the world all experiencing bringing joy to their 'individual' holographic partner that same day thanks to purchasing that upgrade. To you, an intense personal moment, to the company, a calculated project to bring in more revenue.

This was so depressing, I remember watching him losing Joi and I definitely felt the pain.

I think 4:00 is one of the more soul-crushing moments in the film because, up to that moment, even as K acknowledges that she's just saying what she thinks he wants to hear, he still reacts to her closeness as if she was real. He wants to be able to love her as much as we know he does and show that affection, but just as it seems like they can share that beautiful moment, a voice message comes in and she freezes in order to deliver it, and he's reminded that Joi is just an AI companion. She's a product, just as Luv attributes her.

The fact that neither one of them is real, but their love is, is astonishingly beautiful and why one of the reasons this film was so underrated.

3:40 is the part i keep coming back to. both of them in the rain, joi guiding k’s hand to her face, then that line: “i’m so happy when i’m with you.” out of context, this looks like a scene from a cheesy rom-com or something. but when k says, “you don’t have to say that.” it hits you that it’s not. k’s line is so haunting because for a split second, everything felt so real, but he knows it’s not, and joi will follow whatever his preference is.

Such a beautiful yet sad scene. She finally is free to leave the confines of the apartment, and just when he starts feeling a true human connection to her, she is frozen due to an incoming message....but you can see that despite all that, he still loves her.
