Rock mainly refers to the thing while stone refers to the matter the thing is made out of, but in actuality both terms are pretty much used interchangebly

Stone is a wider concept because there are many types of stones like gemstones. Rock is more like the classic rock you see in a cave or on a mountain

Geologically speaking rock is the strata that is not been eroded in water. Stone has been eroded in water and typically has rounded edges. i.e., ( river stone)!🤔
