Chloroform from Bleach and acetone.

Just a video showing the amount of chloroform i made, i was only using a 2.5 percent concentration of sodium hypochlorite that's why the yield is low. You can see bubbles of co2 from phosgene degrade.

The bubbles are from phosgene gas. Its because it wasn't stabilized

I did the reaction with 2 gallons of 10% hypochlorite and, based on my calculations, I used about 290 mL acetone. I'm going to see if I used too much, as I'm going to stir the chloroform with some hypochlorite for a while to react with any acetone. I'll just have to be careful of hydrolysis.

is this a good way of trying chloroform out? I am aware of the risks of this, however i do not want to inhale some toxic chlorine based compound

i mean probably not right the acetone is still present?


chloroform would also be super useful for essential oil extracting

Don't try this experiment indoors is my advice, before the Internet I was experimenting with making a more powerful cleaning product and used these same ingredients luckily I to had it in a glass jar, after noticing the glass getting warmer I took the lid off and nearly chloroformed myself, glad I got the lid back on, it's when you black out and the solution spilt it's fatal.
