Inside Southwark Cathedral... And Up On Its Roof

Did you know that, for decades, Southwark Cathedral was the tallest building in London?

The Cathedral asked if we'd like to come down after hours for a snoop inside: to watch the bell ringers make some serious noise, and to get up onto the roof for some stunning views over London, that few get to see.

We said yes please.

Southwark Cathedral was one of the first sites to see on our first of multiple visits to London and so it remains a favorite spot of ours to this day. Quite jealous of your visit up to the bells, dust and all.

I find both Southwark and Truro Cathedral to the coziest Cathedrals. I suppose so perhaps to their small size. And I know Truro is new in comparison, but is lovely and cozy. Both have lots of nooks and crannies of architecture to get lost in.

What a fantastic tour of what looks like a very beautiful building! I'm surprised the view from the tower isnt more popular!
In a few days i will hopefuly be heading up the tower on my local parish church and doing a little research show that the similarities between my little parish church and Southwark cathedral are quite amazing! Leigh parish church is dedicated to St.Mary the virgin, the former dedication of Southwark cathedral! It also has a large Brass chandelier (albiet a slightly younger 18th century one) which hangs under the tower, and said tower is of late medieval construction whilst the nave is a 19th century re-build, like southwark!

I'll admit the parish church is a little smaller! seating only 710 compared to around 800 i belive in Southwark cathedral, and the cathedral looks to be a much bigger building!

Thankyou for this fascinating look into a fascinating building that i doubt i'd have the chance to see in person! :)
