I love UnRAID. I started with FreeNAS (precursor to TrueNAS) and ultimately decided to go with UnRAID. The biggest deciding factor for me was the ease of expandability. If I wanted to add a drive on FreeNAS, I had to rebuild everything. If I wanted to increase a drive size, same thing, had to start over. If you didn't have the resources to create your entire NAS at the time of building on FreeNAS, then you had to go through a lot more pain than UnRAID. In addition, I thought the FreeBSD jails were a pain to deal with compared to UnRAID's use of dockers in Linux.

This maybe all a moot point now that TrueNAS has a Linux version (Scale), but I left for UnRAID and have been REALLY happy with my decision since and haven't looked back or regretted it.

USB boot drive is automatically and regularly backed up locally and/or to the cloud if you set up Unraid with their Connect plugin. It takes mere seconds to restore a backup to a new USB key with the Unraid image tool (available for ALL OSes) and a few seconds more to transfer the license - which can be done online immediately when you boot your restored backup.

I just refreshed hoping to see more Unraid content. Great uploads ! Liked and subscribed !
I struggle with choosing truenas over Unraid, truenas has always worked for me and the speed is insane, but Unraid is just so simple to use.

It's not just a good NAS OS, it's a great services OS. I use it instead of TrueNAS for NAS. I use it instead of Portainer for Docker containers. Instead of Proxmox for LXC and VM. Four production systems currently running with completely different hardware and for different purposes, all based on Unraid on the back end. 2.5G and 10G networking. Just make sure you're using Unraid version 7 and newer.

Remember that you can also expand the capabilities with plugins and containers, so CA certificates (as an example) is super easy and there are a lot of ways to do it. ACME, Reverse Proxy, Certbot, etc.

As user of both systems, both are good. Truenas seem to be more advanced where Unraid is more oriented to home. But where unraid shines is support, not toxic community, and ease of use. Deploy of container, installing plugins is much simpler on unraid for example

Also don’t forgot that using an Unraid Array with SSD is not recommended as they don’t support Auto Trim. If you want to use SSD then use a cache pool which supports the Auto Trim feature.

Excellent video.
One of the things I love about unraid is that my disks are spun down much of the time when not in use saving power and disk life.
Truenas I couldnt get them to spindown due to constant log writing or apps keeping them open

Sorry.... Truenas is much better... I do not like the idea of usb booting / software licensing ... A big no no no.

It has allot of features. Like truenas scale, that is free.
It is just a unraid commercial.
It used to be a selfhosting, opensource chanell.

The first place to start is performance. Specifically performance for files that do not reside on the cache drives. Every NAS review needs to start with performance. Everything else is secondary.
