. I love hunting for treasure, and this time my junkyard treasure was a little bit better than old pens and loose change! Looking forward to more hunts like this!

In 60 years of metal detecting I would have never even think about hunting in auto salvage yards. I have metal detected ancient city dumps (pre 1900) and found many coins and brass compacts and costume jewelry. You sir are very brave hunting your place. I would spend my time hunting around the old buildings.

This was an interesting adventure. The REO horn button, the Studebaker hubcap, and the 5 pfennig coin made all your efforts worthwhile.

Awesome finds, I hunt without pinpointer lay your detector on the ground and take a handful of dirt pass it on top of the coil if object is in your hand it will sound off. Alway recheck your hole. Also when you do clean ups at old farm house ask to do them also around big trees. Don't let trash discourage you you will find old pull tabs and stuff. Old pocket knife and jewelry some old coins. Enjoy

When I was doing antique car restorations a guy I worked with was cutting a cab corner off a 30s ford truck and over thirty mercury head dimes fell out on the shop floor rolling everywhere don't know how they got there but the customer that owned the truck was shocked that he had a collection of silver mercury dimes. So you maybe onto something metal detecting a old salvage yard.😁👍who knows you may even find Jimmy Hoffa 🤣

Great choice on the equinox. Few Fantastic Finds there. I love the REO and the small hubcap with the S. Keep the German coin. All it is is one of the first things you found. I actually found the same coin when I was collecting coins. I kept it because it was a part of history. No one is going to bad mouth you or think less of you for keeping it. Up to you. Great video. Hope your doing well. Take care.

This is fun! I moved home last October in Suffolk, England and I had a metal detectorist run round my new garden. He found an Elizabethan belt buckle plus some pennies and halfpennies plus a farthing. I later found a neolithic spear head. (My village has millenia of human occupation including Roman and Tudor)

Scrap yard mischief and metal detecting? Sign me up please. My grandfather had a scrapyard and it was my favorite place to visit. Glad I found your channel!!

That 5 Pfennig ... amazing how these things got around, from germany to the middle of kansas. Its made of Zinc, in 1940 they pulled all the brass, nickel, silver and copper coins from circulation because of the war effort and replaced them. There are 1, 5 and 10. Because of your sandy soil it is in relativly good condition, in my area in germany those are usually rotten bad. Right under the numural 5 you can find a little letter, which indicates the mint it came from. A is Berlin, B is Wien, D is München, E is Dresden, F is Stuttgart, G isKarlsruhe and J is Hamburg. My money is on A. ;-) For cleaning use fine steel wool and oil it a litter bit after that, keeps the zinc from rotting more.

I'm also a detectorist. with practice you'll master it and you'll be able to gauge the size of an object before digging it. A tip though, wrap the coil wire round the stem otherwise it'll give you false signals as the wire swings. Go the the old house on your land and search around there, you'll find way better stuff and a lot less big aluminium junk. You can't discriminate aluminium, if you do then you'll miss a whole load of stuff that rings up in the same area. you'll find that a gold ring will come up the same numbers as pull tabs and aluminium will be in the same range as silver. Keep at it, you never know what you'll find. Look forward to the next one.

I used to drive semi. Picking up crushed cars from yards like yours. No problem in the summer. But when the ground got muddy I hated going in. My tires would sink in the mud and get flat from hitting sharp metal. New tire cost me the same amount as I made from my trip.

Another thing, brass vintage parts come out of the ground in good condition usually, well worth digging up 😉

Thanks for sharing, Silas! I thought it was a real adventure, treasure-hunting in the old junk yard! By all means, do it some more!
Enjoy your week! Be safe!

As a long time metal detectorist, I echo the earlier comments; check around all those old farm houses and out buildings. You'll find way better stuff there than at a beach. (Beaches and parks get pounded by metal detector wielding people.) Also, it's unlikely you'll ever be able to get aluminum notched out, and you probably shouldn't as the tones are similar for nickels and gold. Great video, Silas.

I've been out of the metal detecting loop since the Covid pandemic started a couple of years ago. After watching the video, I'll get my detector out of storage, dust it off, put fresh, batteries in it and just wait for spring. Thanks Silas.

Afternoon Silas!! Very cool what you are doing!!!, I remember being 8-10 years old being out in the woods searching for treasures, I'm 65 now & still have some of those treasures that I dragged home on my bike, I've always wanted a metal detector, but unfortunately I don't need another hobby, another thing places to search are far & few....be safe!! God Bless!!
