Why a Triple Surgeons Knot? // Tippet to Tippet Splice

This knot is fast, strong, and efficient for light tippet connections of similar size. It gets a bit ugly with tippet over 10# test, so for that I encourage you to use either a Blood Knot or a Double Uni (see these knots on our channel).

I watch a lot of fisherman. This guy is by far the best!

I love this knot it's so versatile just like the Uni Knot yet I don't like the Uni as much but it's good for mono/mono connections. But it's so cool how you can either tie them onto a lure or use them for connections.

It's always New and improved, what did folks use 100yrs ago. Did they catch less fish, or are the fish getting smarter?

I would argue that the double surgeon is all you need. I've never had the knot pull apart, assuming "somewhat" similar diameters of trout focused tippet (7x-3x).

Does it matter which tag end you tie a second nymph onto? Should it be on the tag facing up the line or down the line toward your other nymph

I’ve had the surgeons knot fail 2 times in a week now. Is going with 20lb braid to 10lb floro leader too much of a difference? Or am I doing something else wrong.

I try to take the time and effort to use a tippet ring. Otherwise a blood knot or double loop knot. I put a friend on some nice rainbows and had a double surgeon’s knot fail. His wife was filming the action and I felt like crap when the knot let loose. OK I might have cut the tag ends a little short or didn’t seat the knot well enough

How about for a saltwater leader instead of blood knot?

Try using 30lb backing or 250-paracord. Those are the lines I use to color code knots for demonstration

Where is his video with the double uni?

I think a quad surgeons adds a tiny more knot strength. Any more than that is impractical.

I tie the blood knot 99% of the time even though it is much harder to tie than the surgeon knot because I believe it has a slimmer profile and you can tie tippets of dissimilar diameter as well and it holds up very well. I think it has similar breaking strength to the surgeon’s knot.
Just as an aside comment, the surgeon’s knot is an overhand knot gone through the loop twice so technically, you’re tying a double surgeon’s knot. It’s a misnomer to call it triple surgeon’s knot. Check it out in “Practical Fishing Knots” by Lefty Kreh-Mark Sosin. 😉
