Ah, the time when SUVs were actually SUVs and not tall cars.

That Jeep was the fastest SUV in the world in 1998. My, how times have changed.

I learned to drive on an 01 Durango that my dad had. That thing was a tank, and it did everything. Overall, it was an extremely solid car.

I really like the bravada, the Durango and the grand Cherokee.

I have a '99 Dodge Durango SLT 4wd w/ the 318 in Patriot Blue. Just checked the engine oil and it's rusty so it might be going to a new home here soon. Also, the power steering is leaking so every time I turn from a stop, its:

I still see dozens of 2nd gen Explorers running around, even in the salt belt.

I still use a 98 Durango daily for rural mail delivery. Has 245k miles and counting. (knock on wood lol)

I still see the Explorers, Grand Cherokees and Durangos in Finland. The ML's had lots of electrical problems and were sold with diesel motors here and those are expensive to maintain. The Land Rovers are usually already broke when new, and boy that v8 is slow as shit....

I see at least a dozen of those explorers, jeeps, dodges, and GM SUVS everyday. Not many Discover 1's running around, though I see a ton of Discover 2's!

take a look at these. These were real SUVs, not these silly poser wagons on stilts we have now

He was sure right about the shape of the ML. I guess it led the charge away from boxy suv's to the sleeker, rounder crossovers. I still appreciate the boxy style though, particularly if it's a real suv and not a crossover. The Land Rover in my opinion looks great even today. The interior looks ahead of it's time as well. It comes away barely even looking dated. Reliability is another question, however.

That bravada is basically an s10 blazer with a different suit. It looks a nice car though.

Bravada: $46, 771
Durango: $46, 361
ML320: $59, 800

If I could go back back in time and buy them, my ranking would be:

1. Discovery
2. Grand Cherokee
3. Durango
4. ML
5. Explorer
6. The GM thing

I’ve always thought the Durango was quite handsome. Still looks good today.

The Durango and explorer were the most popular of the bunch by far. All though mostly rusted and beat to hell I still see 90s explorers and Durango everywhere.

I still see an alarming number of these vehicles on the road besides the mercedes and land rover!

I’m surprised the Land Rover made it through the review without breaking down.

The 90's were one of the best decades to be a consumer in the vehicle market.
