as someone who’s white and english is my only language, i’ve noticed how prevalent younger generations translating for family members is-i work at mcdonald’s and i’ve seen many families doing this and of course i never even batt an eye but since it isn’t my lived experience, i couldn’t help but wonder how this affects the children and family

For me it’s kinda the opposite. I’m Mexican, grew up in a primarily Hispanic community with diverse schools. As a kid never really understood how being Mexican was not always a common thing because a lot of people at school were also Mexican so it was just a norm to me, which is a good thing in my opinion. However I moved to a primarily white town like 3 years ago, which I experienced quote on quote “silent racism” (most accurate description of it) and basically the Hispanic community at school was very silenced and hidden. I was the only Hispanic kid at school to earn awards at graduation, to do well in school, etc. I started to realize how some of the white people in my community act like we are less worthy of anything than them. I realized how different my two towns were and how sad it was that racism still continues to be a problem, even if it’s not directly hating on somebody. Another problem is that the Hispanic street in my town is the most problematic in you could say “crime” etc. the men there go out and get drunk, and are weird. This is another reason why all Hispanics in my community get put into this category that we are drunk all the time, and we cause problems. I have found my place in this community and I have made Hispanic friends. I have tried my best to make them do well at school, and it’s working step by step. Hopefully one day my community can see that being Hispanic is something to be proud of and it doesn’t define us as a person.

I also hated being asian bc I go to a school where there's only a few asians and some people at my school would just look at me weird probably cause I looked different from them. That made me believe that maybe if I was the same race as them I would feel a sense of belonging but now I know that I'm a special person and it's ok to be different from others! You are UNIQUE !

I’m also Asian and I’m 12 years old, Wendy you are so lucky! My school doesn’t have many Asian students there and I wish there was to not make me feel alone❤ I’m sorry that you wish you weren’t Asian but you are so BEAUTIFUL

I’m very lucky to have grown up in quite literally the most diverse community in the US ( Mountain View Anchorage ). I never really associated any race with being poor or rich until I got access to the internet. The richest friend I had was Asian and the one of the poorest was white and I never really thought twice about it as a young kid. I didn’t know it was unusual to grow up with your friend group consisting of two East Asians, a poly girl, a black girl, a red head, an Alaska native, and me and my twin being a half Latina. Its funny talking to people who grew up in communities with only one race living in them because those are the people who hated themselves for their own race. I think the problem is not really as much never seeing your own race around but not seeing enough of others. So remember to love yourself and to experience other cultures. You don’t need a passport and 1000 dollars to do it. Chances are it’s a 30 minute drive away.

I’m Asian and go to a private school with heaps of stuck up rich kids who can’t tell me apart from the other Asians. It’s really annoying but I guess part of living is accepting the things about you that you would like to chnage
