What’s become increasingly clear to me as I age is that I have consistently underestimated the intelligence of animals and overestimated the intelligence of human beings.

Been noticing an escalation of Orcas curiousity of humans on paddle boards/boats and ships... and has now gotten to a point where they are outright attacking certain boats, tearing them apart, and sinking em... something a boat must have done something to a bunch of Orcas that caused them to view certain boats as the enemy, but they don't attack the people directly

I remember Luna the friendly and adorable Orca who interacts lovingly to humans. Got entangled to a boat propeller and died. This is a reminder why they are enraged with this so there is no doubt they hate boats that much.

I've sailed in this area and live nearby. These attacks originated a few years ago near northern Portugal and remained there and in the Bay of Biscay until they spread to the Strait and other spots on the Atlantic coast. They happen now inside the Med near Spain and Baleares as well (just talked to someone attacked near Barcelona).

Several of my sailong friends have been attacked while going through the Strait (not just rudders, hull, keel as well, but generally whatever is closest to the engine). It was almost every third boat that came to Estepona in June 2021. Not all attacks are reported. A lot of facts in this video are skewed or plain wrong. Still, a fun watch ;) and it makes people aware. My theory is that they won't attack if you switch off your engine or have an electrical engine. We switched it off and have not been attacked.

I think it has more to do with sound waves and depth sounder equipment, and that coupled with engine and propeller noise may be the problem . The frequencies may be directly interfering with their ability to communicate

Well the fact that some captains are stopping their boats and then the attacks also stopped should be telling us something...😮

The fact that orcas will attack boats but still not attack humans (even though they easily could if they wanted to) is very telling.. they don’t want to harm us, they just want us to leave them alone. 😌🙏🏽

With brains that BIG, and their incredible ability to learn, I believe its more about their competition for food with Fishermen thats causing the aggression to boats. No doubt they have seen Tuna in vast quantities pulled aboard those Tuna trawlers. No doubt they may even see the Tuna being sliced/ processed & stored (what they do of that process on deck where the Orca might be able to see). This in turn, could show them that we humans are competing for food with them.

I personally think it's survival and trauma that makes them attack boats. They're emotionally intelligent creatures and different pods have their own culture and language and they learn from each other and are very social. Now imagine having your baby or babies (orca calves) kidnapped by humans in boats, never seeing them again and also having your food taken away and your home environment trashed by humans more and more every day. They've had enough of it, clearly, and who can blame them?

My guess is they are aware of the competition over the food and dangers posed by non fishing vessels as well. I feel sure they know the difference quickly in their observations. They are taking action to bring about desired changes in their situations.

Every time a boat comes into our territory, leaving us with a shortage of food supplies

maybe they're realizing alot of the noises underwater come from the boats interfering with their transmission of communication and hunting

Even orcas are sick of humanity. After all humans invade their home.

When orca attacked a ship and sink them nobody survive in the middle of the ocean.
This has been happening for a long time
In the 1960s, there was only one such surviving family that could report that they were rescued after more than a month.
It was also an orca attack.

My theory is they are getting even with humans. The seas are their territory, not ours! This is why I don't go into the ocean.
