What is a GM Counter / Geiger Muller Counter? - explained simply and clearly

Geiger Muller Counters, or GM Counters, are used to measure nuclear particle. A Geiger Muller Counter works on the principle that in the presence of a strong potential difference, a nuclear particle which causes ionization in gaseous molecules can lead to an avalanche of secondary ionizations that results in a sudden discharge, and therefore detection of the particle. Such an avalanche is known as electron avalanche.

Thank you, I now understand how to actually build them! Note, I saw the negatively charged tube in contact with the positively charged wire, this will cause 1 out of the 3 things:
It will blow the circuit breaker,
Short out and melt the wire, or give you a good shock...
