Good advice, look to Piers Anthony's Xanth series, lots of magical plants, animals, and even insects with interesting cross-ups. Snap-dragon flowers that are actual tiny dragon heads that bite anything too close. Horse-flies are tiny winged horse insects. That sort of thing.
