How Colombians Spot Foreigners | Let's Talk About Expats in Colombia

How does a Colombian spot a foreigner?

Have you ever asked yourself how they found out about you being a foreigner? Is it that obvious?

In this video, we asked Ana our friend and partner. Ana was born and raised in Colombia. She helps foreigners relocating to Medellin for over 2 years now.

We asked her about her opinion, can she spot foreigners, and how does she do that?

The fun thing is a lot of foreigners coming here, no matter if Expats or tourists, they bring their usual clothes from back home with them. For them, it is normal to walk around like that.

For tourists, it's a vacation, so why should they dress up, that's at least what a lot of people think. Just by wearing those "beach type" clothes foreigners can be spotted.

Usually, Colombians tend to wear long pants even though it's hot outside, no matter if you are going to Santa Marta, Cartagena, Medellin or other warm to hot places, locals wear long pants no matter what.

Men wearing shorts or even walking around shirtless is something you will rarely find here.

Let's see what Ana has to say about the foreigners and how she as a local can spot them.

Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.

I just came back from Colombia. I’m 6’1” and Asian, pretty sure everyone instantly knew I was a foreigner in both Bogota and Medellin.

I'm from Florida and I've been to Medellin five times in one year I absolutely love the culture and the people and they're in such great shape the first thing I learned which I learned before I went from YouTube dress nice comfortable but nice because they put a lot of work into their looks which is fine

Don’t slam car doors. Colombians are offended if you close the doors too hard.

"Try to understand the culture..." Such great advice, we were in a taxi in Laureles when a pack of obvious US Americans (drunk) walked out in front of our taxi and got all bent about the close call. Our taxi driver just shook his head and said something like, they are not in the US now. Exactly. Interesting Video, thanks!

Oh man, I’ve been trying to figure that out. Being raised in a Colombian household, and speaking Spanish with a Paisa accent, I instantly stick out in Colombia. I don’t know the local slang or understand the way of being. People are very close and friendly, and I tend to be extremely reserve. No matter how hard I try to blend in, people instantly pick me apart 😅

I’m African American and don’t dress like a gringo tourist, I think I’d blend in until people heard my broken Spanish. Tasha you are absolutely beautiful! Subscribed...

Great video.
I've been to Colombia several times, Cartagena and Barranquilla. I never wear shorts ( I don't like them ) and I always speak to people in Spanish and I do carry just a copy of my passport. I would also add to my countrymen from the USA to not talk so LOUD and mind your basic manners as manners and protocol go along way in Colombia.

You spot a foreigner because they look different, dress different and mainly they speak a different language or they speak Spanish with a different accent. So you're not disrespectful at all Anna. Colombians average height is 1.70 cm or 5'7", unlike Americans and Europeans that range from 1.80 ( 6') and up. I also agree with your statement in regards to foreigners acting like they own the country because it's a third world country and they feel somehow superior to the locals. Best advice to any foreigner is to learn and embrace the culture, always be respectful to others and also be aware of your surroundings at all times, Colombia is full of nice and warm people but like anywhere they are a few bad apples that can ruin your experience. Godspeed travelers !

Men that wear socks with sandals are also considered nerds here in America.

* If you want to know the Pacific Ocean: go to Chile.
If you want to know the Atlantic Ocean: go to Jamaica.
If you want to know the Andes: go to Bolivia.
If you want to know the plains of the Orinoco: go to Venezuela.
If you want to know the forests of the Amazon: go to Brazil.
If you want to know pre-Columbian cultures: go to Mexico.
BUT if you want to SEE ALL that together: come to. 🇨🇴❤️❤️🇨🇴 COLOMBIA!. 🇨🇴❤️❤️🇨🇴 + desert of la guajira and that of huila + island of San Andres and Providencia. *

Those tips for foreigners are on point! Those are also applicable to any countries you are visiting. Entitlement should be left home when you and you'll be fine.
